About

A story of couch potato to exercise nutcase is mine. I was never great at sport, always picked in the middle – never last, but certainly never first. ...

Deja-bloody-vu - aaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Nov1420114:01 p.m.

Just when I thought another marathon was in me. Just when I was smashing PBs and doing well. New 5km PB under my belt (20:59), now 10 mile PB under my belt at the Great South Run (1:17:59), all going well. The Andover parkrun, which three friends and I set up is going great guns. I am a lean-mean-running-MASHEEEEEEN I tell you.

SMASH!!! [that's the sound a fall back down to earth makes].

IT band problems, niggly knee. Duff trainers. Physio appointment. The dreaded ELBOW. No running for 1-2 weeks. 5 weeks to go to marathon number 2. No runs over 17 miles done.

A familiar story. This is how it happened in 2009. Right so it turns out I have legs stronger than an elephant on steroids (which is probably why I am a half decent cyclist), but I have glutes like soft powder-puffs. Which is why I get injured when I do big miles.

So my core is in need of attention. And attention I will give it. The Portsmouth Coastal Waterside Marathon may have to be not the triumphant PB I was hoping for, but an exercise in trying out a PROPER running technique, where my pelvis isn't all over the show (physio's words, not mine), my legs are straight and my form is consistent.

Bollocks.

  • simonedumergue 'I do feel for you - I know the issues too - I have weak glutes and ITB and knees like to finish me off before an event. If it is any consolation I had to rest from running for three weeks in the last few weeks before marathon number 2 and got a PB after all of that. Happy taming of the core beast :-) ' added 15th Nov 2011

  • tinabee 'Ah yes the core muscles! Definately worth the effort of strengthening and the glutes too! Try making one day a week a strength day. I am sure you will still have a great marathon.' added 18th Nov 2011
