Core Blimey!

May04200911:07 a.m.

No running yet for me!  All muscle stiffness has disappeared into oblivion.  My left leg is completely run-able but the right...where the shin/ankle/calf issue lingered is most definitely NOT!

For the first few days post FLM I couldn't feel the usual pain in that area at all but by thursday the sharp almost cutting sensation was back again...just shows how much swelling was around the area and therefore masking the injury.  At the moment I can barely hop on that leg and I won't run until I can hop completely pain free.  I am really unsure about what happened on that side but going by feeling my gut instinct is there has been a slight tear to a tendon or ligament or something...as it does feel like the muscle has been sliced.  Sorry if you're squeamish!

Since I last posted I have been slowly getting back into things.  On tuesday night I went to the gym to use the pool, jacuzzi and sauna and i started off with very stiff legs and by the end they really were looser so I would def recommend that post marathon.

Wednesday I cycled into work - honestly cycling was a lot easier than navigating the london underground stairway system...I was also struggling to heave myself out of my tube seat and out the doors before they shut!  On tuesday I actually ricocheted off other passengers to get or stumble out of the tube in time!  You just forget how long it takes to stand up after a marathon!!

Thursday I cycled home from work and Friday I cycled both ways.  I found all bike rides pretty tiring but its good to keep some exercise going...especially that I have a triathlon in less than 5 weeks time!!!

This weekend has been very low key for me but I needed the down time.  On saturday I got myself to the gym for a one hour pilates class.  Whilst I am not running I am trying to get myself back into all the extra curricular activities I have done in the past and my big aim is to get myself doing some core work each and every day.  All running injuries articles bang on about is core core core...my physio and massage therapist both say my injuries are a lack of core and but stability so I am going to get this sorted once and for all.  So i went along and i tried REALLY hard!  I then went for a swim...did the 750m triathlon distance and was surprised I did it in 15 mins 17 seconds...this is a PB!  Ha ha and i am sure i did more lengths than needed.

I also did a bit of socialising...I went to my friend Jo on sat pm and enjoyed her garden in the sun along with a very refreshing G & T and then went on to meet friends in clapham junction for pizza and red wine.  Got home just before midnight feeling a bit zonked.  I am definitely suffering some post marathon flu.  That or i have developed hay fever.

Yesterday I got up and went out on a long bike ride.  Did just over 20 miles in the end.  It was really hard work...prob a bit too soon after FLM but I'll survive.  My lungs were really huffy puffy at the top of the really steep hills.  Got back home and consumed a lot of lucozade products and then had a two hour nap!  I was then completely zonked for the rest of the day...bleugh.  I even wore the compression tights amanda lent me in the hope they would help!!  Was in bed by half ten!!  Triathlon here we come!!

Anyway today I woke up naturally at half 8 feeling pretty fresh.  ALthough I am still really coldy.  I am going to try and make the most of today and achieve lots...and not get all zonked by too much exercise.  Will def go for a swim but I need to get the flat ship shape, go and buy lots of nice healthy food and just catch up on stuff.

Other news...I've lost 5 pounds since FLM...hmmm did someone say something about water retention!  I also had a tooth taken out on friday...ouch....sympathy needed

Have a great BH monday and leave your cars at home!!

If you have put a tear in a muscle you'd probably be ok to do your triathon but you need to take it easy before then ... I prolonged the recovery from my tear because I just wouldn't let it rest and kept trying to 'run it better'!!' added 4th May 2009

  • Hat 'You're a sweetie and thank you for sponsoring me. Yes, I will get the bike out more often, I am just a wuss where traffic is concerned - I don't know how you manage it in London! Great that you're attending Pilates - it will help with core - if there is a Swiss Ball class, I'd go to that too - they are just brilliant (if taught well) and my stomach muscles have strengthened ten-fold and I think it's more down to Swiss Ball than anything else. Hope the tooth extraction hasn't left you feeling too sore and good luck with all your triathlon training! xx' added 4th May 2009

  • daveredrock 'Well done on getting back into it so quickly. My shin & knee injuries were exactly the same - didn't feel them until mid week when the muscles started to go back to normal and marathon aches subsided. Rest now for me, then same as you - core and technique focus to avoid future problems. good luck with the triathlon training.' added 4th May 2009
