All injuries start with "H"

Still no definite diagnosis of my heart condition, things just get referred back to the senior consultant, who I’ve never seen, I guess until they know what it is. But their investigation is about abnormal electrical signals in the heart which also cause ectopic beats. I am hoping they diagnose the following, that I found on the NHS Choices website, just so I can glibly say “oh no this is common amongst us elite long distance runners!”
"First degree heart block It may sound contradictory, but being very fit is one of the most common causes of first degree heart block. For example, the condition is widespread among elite long distance runners. This is because vigorous and prolonged exercise can enlarge the heart muscles, which causes mild disruption to the electrical signals of the heart."
Slightly worrying when I was having a test carried out the other day, the junior doctor who was supervising started to ask me about the heart attack and what medication had been given since. When I replied I had not had a heart attack but a tachycardia episode on a run, the nurse doing the test swapped the notes he was reading for mine, as well as giving him a stare that spoke many words. Hmm let’s hope I’m always conscious when he’s on duty!
I mentioned last time I had cut back on mileage a bit and bizarrely this has coincided with me picking up an injury, so it looks like I may have a zero mileage spell. The symptoms of slight tenderness, pain when running and when I get out of a car door points to hip bursitis, though the pain is right at the top of the hip bone not at the joint area as I would have expected. Not an injury I have heard too many people speaking about on here so not exactly certain how it has happened. I have tried to run through it thinking it might go all on it’s own!!, but it always feels worse the day after so will rest it. It should be fine after a few days off and some ice treatment. A week of cross training looks to be on the cards as well as some strengthening exercises to lessen the chances of getting this injury again.
Hope you are all well.

Simon_Doyle 'Hopefully you are in the elite group then John. I'm sure it's enough to bring on a heart attack being wrongly told you've had one. Hope all is well with you.' added 24th Nov 2011

runnerbarbie01 'Oh dear John this all sounds very frustrating for you. My boyfriend is currently working as a Junior Doctor and I'm afraid to say he may have had several moments similar to the young chap you had a consultation with! They have so much to learn! I hope your hip gets better - sounds like rest is just what's needed and that your elite diagnosis is correct' added 24th Nov 2011

Firefly123 'Goodness me, John! They're certainly taking their time with this diagnosis - and as for that doctor..... I hope the hip problem, at least sorts itself out soon. ' added 24th Nov 2011

SeanG 'Just hope that the Junior Doctor doesn't need to amputate anything any time soon....was it the left one or the right one? :-( Nothing happens quickly with the NHS. However, I think its bit of a ploy so that things will either get better by themselves or they just give up waiting and live with whatever the problem is! Hope that the hip gets better soon.' added 24th Nov 2011

Nick 'It's taking its' time, isn't it? For what it's worth (probably not very much) I have known quite a few veteran runners who have had heart flutters and, by and large, they are fine!' added 24th Nov 2011

malcolms 'I wonder if you mean trochanteric bursitis? Sounds like the right spot for it. Clearly can't comment on the state of the NHS without declaring vested interests... hope you get some answers soon' added 24th Nov 2011

crooxi 'Oh dear, this is all getting a bit long and complicated, isn't it? I really hope there is light at the end of the tunnel soon. And now the hip? Has it got significantly colder recently? - my knee always lets me know about these weather changes. Whatever it is, I hope it gets better soon.' added 24th Nov 2011

HellenH 'Blimey John - things aren't moving very quick, and as said before its enough to bring on a heart attack being told you've had one! I hope it gets sorted soon for you and I hope the hip heals soon too. You normally find that once the body "relaxes" a bit due to one problem all the others start raising their heads! :)' added 25th Nov 2011

simonedumergue 'Ooh, I like the idea of it being due to elite fitness! Gosh it is dragging on though isn't it - hope you get a proper diagnosis soon. Amazing - that hip thing you describe is EXACTLY what I went to see a physio about today - the position as you describe. Mine apparently was nothing to do with my hip as my range of motion and lack of pain when she did various things ruled that out but my 'hip pain' (worse the next day and particularly when standing up from a sitting position) as you describe is due to my medial glute muscles being weak - where the glute muscle comes around the side to the hip area and joins to the ITB band. I have to do lots of strengthening exercises including the 'clam' with a band thingy, while lying on my side and also lying on my back with the band around my knees and feet hip distance apart moving one leg out each side to put tension on it and control the movement back to the centre. Might be worth a go??' added 2nd Dec 2011

Hat 'No doubt at all that you are up there with the Elite Mr F! But what a price to pay! And now the hip - not having a very good time are you? I hope both conditions sort themselves out very soon though.x' added 7th Dec 2011
