3h 43m

Oct0220119:37 p.m.

3 hours 43 minutes thats how long it took me to drive back from the Mablethorpe marathon today. And if you have ever sat in a car that long after a marathon you know how challenging that was! Thank goodness for air conditioning and automatic cars.

Mablethorpe was interesting. Managed to meet Sean (the Running Man) and Rudders (aka Stroke Man / Ruddys Marathon Effort) (maybe I should get a "Something Man2 in my title? Any suggestions? Before hand. Was a case of catching up with Sean who I have bumped into and run with before and saying hello for the first time to David. Also managed a quick hello to a colleague from work who was doing the half.

On the subject of the half - the main thing I didnt like about this race was that they set the half runners off 30 minutes (well today 20 minutes) early. Don get this - seems pointless to me and as I overtook the first half runner just before 5 miles it must be pretty demoralising for many of them. Guess there were 250 full runners and about twice that halfers.

Brief word then I will try not to mention it again but it was bl**dy hot today. mid to high twenties. It was brutally hot and little or no cover on this course which is largely flatand open. Many struggled and as I wascoming round the first time saw a few half runners flat out being treated.

Two laps worked OK but the course if anything is too flat. It just doesnt give you any relief. First half was fine but I really struggled in the second half and just had no energy - lots of reasons why that I can change and do better next time but no excuses just wasnt a good day at the office today.

Nice crowds in patches and brilliant marshalls and they managed to get water to almos all the marshalls not just the water stops so there was planty. Nice race but totally at mercy of weather as if it was cold and windy it would be very exposed.

Managed to get round in 3:43 - exactly the same time it took me to drive home!

Hope all is well in your warm worlds

  • Nick 'Well done, Keith- another marathon to add to your total! Glad you managed to meet up with Sean and Ruddy as well. I shall think of a witty Username for you with Man in the title, but it's a bit late in the evening now!' added 2nd Oct 2011

  • SeanG 'Pretty brutal out there yesterday. Haven't felt so knackered post-marathon for so long but that could be down to a variety of reasons. On the plus side, it will cool down again this week (and no doubt be snowing by next Sunday)! One extreme to the other.' added 3rd Oct 2011

  • Johnf 'Well run Keith, sounds a tough one. I agree with the flat theory, think you need a bit of variation to refocus on sometimes in a race and make your mind and body have to think about it. Most of the man titles I can initially think of have something like crazy in them, I'll try harder!' added 3rd Oct 2011

  • crooxi 'I agree that flat does not necessarily = easier. For one thing it uses exactly the same muscles the whole time. Having done a pancake-flat marathon yesterday, my quads are killing me today! Next time (?!) I shall be looking for something a bit hillier! That said, it did take me rather longer than it took you................. congratulations on the 3:43 - both the race and the drive home!' added 3rd Oct 2011
