Oh to be jetlagged in Cannes, France....

It's 4:30 a.m. in Cannes, France, and I finally have internet access. After being here since May 12 (alas, my birthday which received no celebration), Internet has been impossible and my phone is still being activated...sigh....

The plane over was decent...as decent as a 14-hour trip can be, I guess. The highlight was definitely my plane food pick of the pasta dish, rather than the chicken that I couldn't stomach the last time I flew and they ran out of the pasta dish before getting to me. Sad part was I had already seen both of the films shown: Mad Money and The Golden Compass when they debuted in theaters.

Upon arrival in Cannes La Bocca, a town right next to the real Cannes with that Festival going on soon, I immediately began searching for ways to have internet and phone. The internet was just finally fixed (somewhat....I'm sitting in the lobby of our residence, plugged into an outlet originally used for a light-up sign that I stole for my own) and phone situation is still being sorted...

Good news is this: the Cannes Film Festival officially starts tomorrow, er, today, and that is exciting. The first day is a basic getting oriented kind of day with a few Market screenings and the first premiere film, which is Blindness, the Julianne Moore/Mark Ruffalo drama. Also tomorrow night are the opening ceremonies "starring" Sean Penn and Natalie Portman. Not really a "starring" situation per se, but Penn and Portman are the most well-known members of the jury this year, though I heard Persepolis author/inspiration Marjane Satrapi is also joining the jury. These ceremonies are some of the toughest tickets in town though. Stay tuned.
The buzz around Cannes is crazy this year - mostly revolving around the big Indiana Jones movie. Are Spielberg, Lucas, Ford AND LaBeof all going to walk that red carpet?? Let's hope so - but we'll have to wait until Sunday, May 18 to officially find out, even though  Indiana is everywhere in the city...posters, magazines, T-shirts, you name it.
    Some other developments:
~James Gray (director of last year's We Own the Night) has another film in Cannes this year starring mainstay Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow called Two Lovers. They seem to love him in Cannes, ever since The Yards was nominated for a Palm in 2000.
~Brangelina is pretty set to attend her two premieres, according to word on the street. Apparently, they're located at their French home as of late, so easy travel for the pregnant Jolie for the Kung Fu Panda and Changeling red carpet events.
~A Kung Fu Panda sign is set up on approximately the same boardwalk as last year's Bee Movie sign that saw Jerry Seinfeld dress up as a bumblebee and fly down from the skies to begin a huge case of film promotion for the animated tale. Can anyone say Jack Black in panda costume?? We shall stay tuned.

That's all for now, as I need to pass out and recover some (okay, lots) of very lost sleep. Good thing the Festival is in slo-mo tomorrow. Pictures of some of the movie art/posters around town will be posted shortly.

Au revoir!
