Preparing for possible drop-out

Apr0520118:16 p.m.

I've been dogged by injury with left ankle / foot for almost a month now.  There have been times when the injury has only been a minor niggle - last week I managed to run 20 miles on it - but there have also been times when it has been worse and I've had to avoid running altogether - a total of 2 weeks training missed.  Unfortunately the injury still hasn't cleared up completely.  I've had sports massage x 3, with another session booked in later this week.

I decided to test my legs out with a steady 3 mile run first thing this morning, as the pesky ankle wasn't too bad.  All seemed to go ok during the run and immediately afterwards.  Unfortunately, 6 hours later, as I set off to walk down to school, the muscles around my ankle seemed to go into sudden spasm and I had sudden intense pain sensations.  It was bizarre as I'd been mooching around the house during the day without any real discomfort.

So this evening I've fallen back to the default position of taking ibroprofen and icing the lower leg.  This seems to have settled the pain down again.  But it really doesn't bode well does it, with only 12 days to go until the marathon ?

I stumbled at the final hurdle last year, pulling out in March, through injury.  There is no option of deferring my place in London for another year, because the rules say I can't.  Anyway, I know my body won't put up with more months of intense training, so no point even considering an alternative marathon in the running calender.

I think I will be making my way to start line, in great trepidation.  I may be one of those sad souls (0.05%!) who starts and never makes it to the finish line.  But I think I will give it a try.  No more running for me from today until the 17th.  Fingers crossed very tightly that the injury heals itself in the next 12 days and I haven't lost too much fitness !!!!!!
