Biting those fingernails.......

For many of my friends around the Premiership in England and the Celtic League in Wales, their season is drawing to an end with a final game with not much to play for, apart from ending with a nice win to make the end of season drinks slide down slightly sweeter. At Wasps we definitely don’t have one of those games. Our last game of the season is a relegation decider with Newcastle. We have a 4 point advantage over them, so they need to beat us convincingly to jump ahead of us and stay in the league. We are at home at Adams Park and the support for this game is brilliant. The match will be a sell out for the first time this season, something all of the players are excited about. When Adams Park gets going, it really can create a great atmosphere, and we probably haven’t given the supporters enough to shout about this season.
So it would be fitting to give the packed crowd plenty to get behind us. On top of the relegation, the club is also up for sale as our current owner is looking for someone to take it over. A buyer was close to taking over the club a few weeks ago but that fell through. There is a new group of people who are interested and we will hopefully hear some good news on that front in the next couple of weeks. With both those issues, it hasn’t been an easy last few months for the squad, with many injuries adding to the frustration. But we have dug deep and with plenty of talented youngsters standing up when we have needed them, we still have our destiny in our own hands.

Saturday is obviously going to be an anxious day for me and my family, but even more so for my wife. Her dad, my father-in-law, is the Liverpool FC manager Kenny Dalglish and they are of course playing in the FA Cup Final v Chelsea at Wembley. So, after watching the majority of my game, she is shooting off to get from north-west to north London to start her second half of a nail and by this time, possibly finger biting day. I think she will deserve a drink by Saturday night more than anyone!!! Last week was another visit to the kitchens of Auberge du Lac, Brocket Hall to help raise money for the chefs that were 'running' the Virgin London Marathon. Finishing was the main goal, and definitely no time target was set!! To be fair, they work such long hours in the kitchen, I don’t know how they find any time to relax let alone train for a marathon.
Mind you I can see how they can keep their weight down, the kitchen gets soooooo hot when the ovens and hobs are firing!! There were 5 players in the kitchen cooking a small set menu with the real chefs keeping a watchful eye on us. Once you get the hang of the dish and you have no feeling left in your burnt fingers, it is a really enjoyable experience. With orders coming thick you get a fair bit of adrenalin going and I can definitely see why someone would want to be a top chef. It is very satisfying when you see your dish going out. The picture is head chef at Auberge du Lac, Phil Thompson showing us one he made earlier.

Once the weekend is done and dusted it’s a nice break!!! A couple of weeks of not a great deal, hopefully getting some sun and switching off from the egg shaped ball as much as possible. I do find it difficult to do no training at all, especially when I'm away on holiday and eating and lying around are pretty much the only options. Sometimes it's good to let things go a bit, then you get to a point where you really are ready to get back to doing a bit of training. Have a great weekend.

marcphillips 'Just keep focused on keeping Wasps where they belong, the cooking, holiday etc will follow. As long as Wasps stay in the Premiership then backers will be found. Remember this is one of the greatest English rugby clubs with a long tradition of success and it should be a privilege to represent them at the highest level. Good luck tomorrow!' added 4th May 2012
