Calling Ballot runners . . . . . .

Oct08201011:58 a.m.

Hi all

Got an e-mail from Meningitis Research Foundation ( www.meningitis.org ) yesterday – I have been selected as one of their Bond runners for next years VLM. I’m really pleased – I ran for them this year in the VLM, and raised about £2000. MRF fund research into finding vaccines, testing etc. They also run a 24/7 helpline, and extensive support groups across the UK. Stats for meningitis are, for the UK:

About 3600 case each year – of those about 360 will not win the battle, and a further 700-800 will be left with some sort of side effect, ranging from hearing loss, to multiple lost limbs. It can affect anyone, at any age – read my blog here on RB or my Facebook page for details on how it affected me.

MRF are looking for ballot runners that maybe considering running for a charity. I can tell you that the support they give their runners ins fantastic, with loads of help on the fundraising side of things – they have always been a phone call or e-mail away for me.

Being a Ballot runner, means that you will not have to raise a set amount for them – even £50 will make a difference. My experience of the 2010 VLM as a golden bond runner showed me that running for a cause really helped me get round. I think if I hadn’t got so many people following me (my daughters school of 350 kids all sponsored me), that it really did help me round those last few miles, when I was ready to give up. The thought of letting those people down was a huge boost, and kept me going.

If you would like to join the MRF VLM2011 team, either PM me for details, or e-mail Laura Coakley at laurac@meningitis.org

All money – however much you can raise will make a difference.

  • Shirley_Waterhouse 'My son's friend Mark became one of the 1/10 who don't make it just over three weeks ago. He was struck down in just couple of days aged just 14. I didn't get in through the ballot but have just heard I have a gold bond place with meningitis UK, who focus on research for a vaccine. I would have been proud to run for any of the meningitis charities, and I really hope any ballot runners reading this will support one of them. No parents should have to lose their child like this.' added 15th Oct 2010
