AND SO IT BEGINS.....

Well since the last time I wrote a blog I have been running for fun. A couple of times a week but nothing too far or too serious. I've put on about 2 stone and haven't really been serious about training in general.
However, I managed to do the Great North Run, but this took 2 1/2 hrs.
So as next year is my 40th year on the 3rd Rock from the Sun I have decided to achieve some personal goals. The first...get seriously fit, second...run the Silverstone Half in 1:30ish, third...The FLM in 4hrs, the fourth...The GNR in 1:30ish.
If I achieve these goals then I can say the FLM will be the last marathon I run.
I would also like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and have thrown lots of very heavy hints to the mrs about her paying for this instead of having a party. Although, i'm not sure we can afford it. But who knows where the financial world and our personal finances will be this time next year, so fingers crossed.
Training begins in ernest next week. I've just downloaded a training plan for my Garmin off Runners World web site to achieve a 4hr Marathon.
One piece of advice I would give anybody training for the marathon for the first time, would be buy a Garmin or similar. It is so easy to know exactly how your running and fitness are going if you have one. I never for my first marathon and I never achieved the amount of distance required on each run just because I was mapping it and getting the distances wrong!
Also going to get on a diet and give up drinking until xmas at least!
:-(
Anyway, enough for my first blog. Train hard.

ruthbramwell 'Good luck with the training! Kili is also a big goal of mine... I hope to do it in the future but only after I've hopefully got through the challenge of the London Marathon! Completely agree with the Garmin statement, I invested in a 405 not so long ago and now I couldnt be without it..... they are fantastic, if not a bit complex to get your head around!' added 8th Nov 2008
