The end of the beginning

Mar0120097:05 p.m.

Completed a 13.16 mile run in 1 hour 52 minutes and 10 seconds.

First milestone achieved!!!!……………….13 miles down, 13 to go! Great run yesterday, I was exhausted after 11 miles but kept going to the end. Not much sign of the injury either, a couple of twinge’s here and there, but other than that it was fine. My recovery time was good too; I began to feel normal again after only about 6 hours, which is a whole day faster than last weekend!

I say ‘Great run yesterday’, but I don’t really mean that, what I actually mean is ‘Great finish yesterday’. It’s only once I’ve finished that I can look back, with relief it’s over and with a small sense of pride think – thank god I don’t have to do that again for another week.

However, after running 13 miles, the enormity of the task ahead has dawned on me. Once I’d completed the run I had nothing left to give, I had no moisture, energy or will power left in my body. I’m really pleased I managed to drag myself around the course, but I will make sure I’m never so under prepared for a long run again. As an absolute minimum I will take an isotonic drink and some sort of energy snack. Now I’ve run a long distance I realise it’s not just a case of feeling tired, but more a complete lack of energy, your body has used up all its immediate reserves of fuel and is desperately trying to find anything it can burn, just to keep you going.

It’s a learning curve, and I realise I’m not at the end, nor am I at the beginning of the end, but I am at the end of the beginning!
