Football...Aaaarggggghhhh...I HATE getting old!

Oct20201012:19 p.m.

I'm getting back into the groove slowly with the running. Only did one 3 mile run last week, which was hard, I think I'd eaten shortly before starting which didn't help :-(, but this week I've already done two (mon and tues) and ridden 11 miles on my bike, plus 5 a side tonight, and I might ride or run there! So getting some measure of fitness back, not that I'm not fit, just not as fit as when I'm really working at it!

Football on Sunday has forced it actually. Subbed at half time, I was so embarrassed I could barely look at anybody. I've got a million and one excuses, played out of position (up front and I'm a centre midfielder), the team was playing poorly at the start, and I did OK...playing up front I'm only ever going to flick it on (I'm tall), or get hold of it and retain possession, normally by going backwards because when I receive the ball I'm facing my own goal 95% of the time...of course I don't see why I'm played up front if that isn't going to be enough, as that is all I do really, oh and chase down defenders, Emile Heskey with less goals...I've said for a few years now! I'm better than being pulled off without explanation at half time though. The strength of my game now is passing, especially forward in behind full backs for the wide men, or finding a forward with a through ball, and I can't do that when played up top.....but the thing I need to find, the thing that used to make me a reasonable player, was that once upon a time I'd go past people, go on a run with the ball from deep and worry people. Now I don't even try to commit players, just look for the quickest pass, and that probably isn't good enough I guess. I don't know if its because I'm slower, don't want to get fouled and/or hurt, or if its because laziness has crept in......maybe I'll never get it back and it really is time I wound down my playing days. Because getting subbed ruined my weekend!! Another guy was a sub and din't even get to play, so I'm irrationally slighted, but I have my pride I guess, and in truth I knew it was coming, which probably tells a story I knew I hadn't done enough, hence why I'm back running this week, determined to do enough next time out!!! What a big girls blouse I am!!!

Boys and their football, amazing that at 35, getting subbed or dropped makes me feel like a rejected little kid again!!!
