Injury Strikes!!!

Feb2220101:45 p.m.

I played football yesterday, after a 10 mile run on Saturday, and my calf went. It just sort of got harder and harder until it was rock solid, and any pushing off or sprinting became impossible. In fact in the afternoon walking wasn't the easiest thing, making me worried it was a tear, rather than a strain or a slight pull. I've been feeling it when running for a little while, so it was building up, especially with the impact of going down hills, where I've really learnt to use the gradient to speed up with little effort. At least it wasn't because of football, just a symptom of running in general.

The worst part is I am in part glad! I got through to now injury free, and have been dreading picking a knock up close to the big day. I've also been killing myself with guilt, when I've failed to fit in a run, or I feel I've not been out for long enough. Enforced rest, with some light gym activity might be nice:-) I could do with some re-evaluation as long as this means no longer than a week out, before a really heavy March, where I plan to up the game to 50 miles a week minimum, with my 15-18-20-22 mile runs mixed in there hopefully.

What it might also do is make me stop playing Sunday football, which I've been unable to quit. I've quit getting drunk quite successfully (the odd beer I permit myself, Cheltenham Gold Cup to come apart), but I can't say goodbye to football because (a) I enjoy it so much, and (b) I am playing decent stuff (when not concussed like last week, or injured like this week).....we'll see...my head says stop and draw a line for this season. My heart says play every week. Heart wins out with me every time!!!

I'm really looking forward to the BUPA 10k in London in MAy too. Finally some friends are doing it too, and we are going out afterwards for a few beers.....Exercise, beers, food, and friends, all the things I love in one day. Should be good!!! PLus 10k already feels like a routine everyday run, so by May it should just seem like a little trot round and I can take in the atmosphere and the route! Sweet!!!
