Serpentine 5K Race

Today saw if I could improve on my woeful 17:23 from last month. All the signs have been there for an improvement and I was hoping for a sub 17 minute time. The weather today was cloudy but extremely windy. The plan for the first k was to stay in around 8th position and run 3:20. I must admit I really had to hang back especially as a nice group developed in front of me.1 k 3:22 (about 15th). The next k the plan was to stay out of the wind as much as possible as it was directly in our faces and I saw Dave Cox next to me (the nemesis). This k seemed quite slow 3:31 (17:30 pace), at that point all hopes of agood time evaporated. During the third k I stayed at the front of our group and we finally turned at 2800m out of the wind. 3k in 10:26 (3:33) and 14 seconds outside 17 minutes splits. Not surprisingly the 4th k was faster with the wind on our back and a guy and myself left the group and caught up two other guys. 4th k 3:24 (13:50). This mean’t if I wanted torun a sub 17 minutes I had to run a 3:10 last k which would be the fastest ever k I have doen on this course. So I went for it, caught up two more guys and sprinted the last 200m to come home in 16:59….I think. Overall a good race and I think I could have gone at least 10 seconds quicker with a little more confidence.
On the home front, we are off back to Clacton and apparently there is an air show tomorrow? The kids got their hair cut today and the missus is starting to look at courses to enhance her employability (she does currently work) when son number 2 goes to the same school as son number 1 in 2 years time.
Have a great weekend.
