The Canterbury 10

Jan2720085:51 p.m.

This race started at 11am which was good because it's 70 miles away or about 1 and a bit hours (time permitting for getting lost etc!!)

So me and my official fanclub and photographer, Z, arrived as the first car in the park-and-ride (£2 per vehicle - bargain!) and got our own private bus to the race HQ.  Being a captive audience the hall was full of stalls, massage tables and shoe sellers, and it wasn't before long that I'd parted cash for some new kit and energy bars.

I disbanded Z to find a suitable photography stop as 11 o'clock approached and then we were off!!  It took about 3 minutes to get to the start line and I soon realised that it was going to be a bit of a hassle for the next 3 miles overtaking dozens of slower runners. I was determined to beat last week's 83 min run particularly as the weather was again mild and there was virtually no wind. Glorious Kent countryside soon surrounded us and I was on good form as we approached the first "hill" at 4 miles. Ok, it was a hill and so I took the opportunity to take the energy bar (quite nice - definitely better than those "gels" - too sickly sweet). It was tough on the quads though but I didn't stop running - thanks to the circuits classes I think!!!

When the hills stopped being hills they became dips, and I took every opportunity to stride down these (same energy expended, no additional breath required, just simply more distance travelled!!!)  and overtook dozens more -- haven't people got this trick yet!!!

So there was another extended hill from 7 to 8 miles which I tackled without too much problems. The busy crowded start was now evened out to a line with many overtaking / drafting opportunities. I saw Z just before this hill and although there was an approx 1 mile visibility line-of-sight, she nearly missed me, but I think that she has got some official proof that I was there!!!

The last 2 miles were on familiar terrain and were gently downhill so again I was able to make some places. Got to the end and saw the finish clock on something like 01:19:XX - so have knocked some three minutes of last week's and the 2006 Dry Hill 10M record - hurrah!!!

Monday is a rest day. Well, except for the 'body conditioning' class. She will make it hard no doubt to punish me for a sin in a past life. Evil but probably justified.
