Race Pace... Heartbreaks & Milkshakes!
Mar1420103:21 p.m.
Hello friends,
18.2 miles this morning, and I finally managed to control my pace to what (I hope) will be my marathon pace of around 8.10/m. My carb loading and hydration is not only great fun (eat as much as you like!) but is also starting to pay off on the long runs and today I felt that I could just carry on and do a marathon...just because I could..I felt invincible!
However, the ligament on my right knee had other ideas... the combination of running surfaces that I had to use in order to string together a long (and not boring circuits) run, included some small rubbly parts, took their toll, and I was feeling the dreaded ITB inflammation pain as early as mile 13. I ran through it twice, but at 18 miles it just went 'no more' and the pain was too much to carry on.. To be fair I was only due to do 18 miles today, but had miscalculated my distance and was 2 miles away from my car, on a beachfront promenade with no taxis for a good mile or so! Oh dear... I hobbled for a bit and then called my Wife who came and picked me up...
Still, it's recovering well, and I know what I need to do to prevent it - scale back the miles in a week where there's a long run due at the weekend..I jumped from 30 to 40 miles this week, which can't have helped.. The biggest concern of course is will it get me round the 26.2 without re-occurring...? of course it will - I have faith!!
Best part of the day, other than the run itself (before it all went wrong) was the amazing banana milkshake I had when I got back - here's the tip.. cut up & freeze a banana the day before, then just stick it in a blender with some milk and honey...it was sooooo nice, and helped refuel me nicely!
So, lounging on the sofa, recovering well with some hot cross buns.. only a few weeks till the big day now!!
