Starting Out - YET AGAIN
Dec1220074:12 p.m.
This April will see me start the London Marathon and November the New York Marathon. Both events have been deferred as following key-hole surgery on my left knee I had similar surgery on my right knee six weeks ago. As well as removing torn cartilage they performed micro-fracture where they drilled tiny holes into my femur to encourage stem cells to create new cushioning where my original cartilage was worn.
After 4 weeks of recovery I joined the gym and have been swimming most days since and embarked on a non-impact aerobic plan so that when I finally hit the road in the New Year I am able to have some general fitness under my belt. I have run a few half marathons and have been the member of a local running club for a years where the interval training and general track work in the past were key to my general level of fitness.
By the time I actually start running I reckon I might have 11 or 12 weeks to get ready to stumble! my way around London but having deferred it once I can't do so again and I'm determined just to be a part of it. New York is my main goal in the next twelve months and I hope to be able to do that race justice by at least running the entire course.!

Keith_L 'Good luck with the quest - but ouch - are you sure running london so soon after surgery is wise? I am doing the two races the other way around. Did NY a few weeks ago and London in the spring. NY was truely awesome, great city and a brilliant race but the course can be hard in places. London is supposed to be much flatter! Good luck - Keith' added 12th Dec 2007

StuV 'Thanks. I was running sooner after my first surgery than after the second. But almost as soon as I picked up the distance to about 6 miles the right knee gave way. There are mixed thoughts on recovery after this surgery but my surgeon seems to think if I take it easy and don't start until after Christmas I should be fine.' added 12th Dec 2007
