Marathon effort.......

Jun2120104 p.m.

Blimey what a few days. Where to start? Well let's get the football out of the way right now. Woeful. That is the most polite way to describe the rubbish that England produced last Friday. I watched the game down in Bristol where I was hosting a football dinner in the company of Ray Parlour and Tony Adams.

To hear these two former Arsenal teammates in full cry was a delight and it kept us all going as the shambles in Cape Town unfolded before us on the big screen. Tony Adams claims he is still quicker than John Terry and Jamie Carragher and looking at him, it is hard to disagree. But a good time was had by all, notwithstanding the result.

Happily I can take refuge from the football in the joys of the tennis at Wimbledon. As I gaze out on the manicured lawns of SW19, the world of footballers throwing strops could not be further away. I warmed up for the Championships with a brisk 2 mile run this morning. I also did a 4 mile effort last week which was inspired entirely by the marvellous lunacy of Alan Murchison. Regular readers will recall that he was one of my Hairy Haggis teammates at Edinburgh. He ran two legs of the relay for us before going on to complete his first full distance race.

Well that was what, a month ago? Well he followed that with another marathon the weekend before last. He ran the South Downs Marathon and just reading his blog inspired me to get out there and run a little further! So despite nursing a summer cold (boring), I pottered out this morning to warm up for Wimbledon. Last year, hilariously, a lady came up to me and said hello. She turned excitedly to her friend and before I could open my mouth said, "this lady used to be a player....." Hmm not really, not unless she saw me at the Perranporth Grasscourt Championships.......Toodle pip.
