Walk this way......

Hello funsters how are we all? I’ve had a peculiar few days. Naturally I have become World Cup obsessed, as I knew I would. But I don’t know if it’s just me, but I don’t feel the tournament has quite come alive yet. We need a 3-3 or a 4-4 to really get things going…..and possibly an England win without any kind of defensive calamity would also be nice. In between the delights from South Africa, I have of course been trying to keep fit and squeeze in a spot of work. Yesterday I met an old work colleague for lunch and found myself sat on a table next to Steven Tyler from Aerosmith….. on the other side of us was Derek from Big Brother…… Honestly I didn’t know where to look first…..and sadly I couldn't tell if our Steven did walk that way....

So I scuttled home and caught most of Italy 1-1 Paraguay from the comfort of my armchair and stepper. Yes I have indeed been as good as my word and used the stepper errr just the once while watching the footie. Well you know I have been terribly busy and all that……. But in mitigation I have also tried to limit my pringle and beer intake…..which peaked during the England v USA game but has now subsided somewhat.
And I have also been hitting the roads. I’ve done two runs in the last 3 days although I must confess the old knees are creaking a little. And while I’ve been pounding the streets, I‘ve really noticed lots of people playing football. It’s amazing how a major tournament galvanizes people into action. It’ll be the same next week when Wimbledon starts. Suddenly the courts will be full of people trying to serve like Andy Roddick while simultaneously strutting around like Roger Federer…..although significantly they don't try and dress like him......

But it is amazing how the World Cup just takes over. Indeed to such an extent that events like Royal Ascot will hover politely in the background. Wimbledon will still be huge, but even The Championships will have to defer to Fabio Capello if England go deep into the tournament. Other sports simply slip under the radar, like Britain’s young boxers, who took three silver medals at the European Championships at the weekend. Their achievements are significant with London 2012 looming, but they were simply drowned out by the drone of the vuvuzelas from South Africa.

Still it is only once every four years I suppose and it is marvellous. And as I was pondering the possible delights of Brazil v North Korea on the tube yesterday, I noticed an advert for British Military Fitness. It shamed me. I know, I’ve been pondering doing that for some time haven’t I? Well I took the sign to be just that…..a sign…..that I should actually do it. So I promise, once Wimbledon is done, I shall fling myself into it with gusto. I really will…….
