I'm back!

Jan2020106 p.m.

Hey!

I'm back!!!

Sorry I haven't posted for a while. Things have been a bit crazy and I haven't been making the progress with my training as I hoped - and I had a small injury to contend with.

1st issue - lack of training progress. Despite my best efforts (well, efforts even if not always my total best lol) I have not been able to break my 5min mark......I can jog a few 5min intervals but I can't seem to get to running for more than 5mins at a time!

2nd issue - my small injury. I was finding that I was getting some pain down the side of my right knee whenever I ran on the road. It wasn't so bad on the treadmill or when playing netball but for a day or two after a road run it was really painful.

Some recent discussions with people have given me these solutions.....

1st - my 5min block. A friend of mine at netball who runs quite a lot thinks that part of my problem is that I'm getting a bit bored while I'm running on my own. She's suggested we go for a run together soon, she fully expects I will run much more than I do presently because I have someone with me to keep up and challenge me each time. I think it'll work. I'll keep you all posted!!

2nd - my knee. A visit to the Dr and a physio haave both indicated the same reason for my sore knee - that I have tried too much! I'm a sizable person, built more for comfort than speed and have never run like this before. They think that I have a bit of weight going thru my joints when I'm running on the road and they're not used to it. Beacuse of that it's all been a bit much for my poor knee and it was protesting. they suggest that i try and loose some weight, build up my running time more on the treadmill and also build some more strength in my legs on the bike - then maybe attempt s smaller race such as a 10k. Both have suggested that I give silverstone a miss while I let my knee recover properly.

And so that brings me to my bad news......while I was determined to prove everyone wrong and run 13.2miles.....it'snot going to happen. I'd rather aim for a 10k such as Oxfords Town and Gown and have (hopfully) a pain free knee!!!

So there we have it - a full sugarplum fairy update and a new goal!!

  • roddymacp 'Totally agree with your friend coming with you. I had a mental block at 2 or 3 minutes for 2 years until somebody set me targets. Within a few weeks that had become 6,8 10, and 11 minutes--No problem. Stick at it and lower your sights to a 10k. Half marathons can come next year. Good luck.' added 20th Jan 2010

  • Alaistair 'Sounds like your getting real good advice from the Dr & physio, pulling out of the Half is a good move, you could really hurt you knee. Roddy is right about small goal setting to break that 5 min mind block...actually I couldn't even run for 5 minutes when I started running so your really doing better than you think!' added 23rd Jan 2010
