Is this getting too serious?

Just ordered my first wetsuit. Hopefully it will arrive in time for my first sea swim of the season on May Day.
To be honest, I don't really want a wetsuit. I swim quite happily without one and it seems like another thing to maintain and look after, not to mention the chafing that most people get with them.
But most events insist that you wear one and even I am willing to admit that I might get a tad cold in Lake Windermere after 5 hours of swimming.

eclipse 'Bit out of my depth Lol, to be honest if you are serious then I would go with the wet suit and train with it so that it dosnt surprise you on event day. Tel' added 31st Mar 2009
