5 Miles on Tired Legs, and Socks
Another mild day, I could get used to this warmer weather. 5 miles on the schedule today and while I felt quite bouncy before I set off, after 5 minutes running my legs felt rather heavy. I had decided to give my new trainers another outing after we nearly fell out at Silverstone! I threaded the laces really loosely at the bottom and I am happy to say it worked. Although the big test will be another long run. I will save them for my last long run on Easter Sunday. One thought did strike me as I was trundling along was socks. My feet do seem to get quite warm and quite possibly swell up a bit on long runs. Does anyone have a cool sock recommendation?
I managed 5.17 miles in 50:52 so just under 10 m/m pace. It felt quite comfortable apart from a lack of bounce in the old legs. A rest day tomorrow before 5 miles on Saturday and 20 on Sunday. Here I might add that I have the utmost respect for anyone persevering with Hal's Intermediate II schedule. If I were still on it I would be doing 10 miles on Saturday at marathon pace, before Sunday's long one - oooh that seems a step too far!
Happy running all x

squa25 'I bought trainers half a size up and I wear hilly twinskins for my long long runs, mono skins on the shorter ones - yes I am sock obsessed but I like them! I don't think they keep my feet cool but they don't hold in the sweat. The drought I get from the front of the trainer is quite nice though. I am breaking in a new pair at the moment too. They are quite solid and not moulded to me feet yet, a couple of runs and they'll be all dirty like the other pair. Sounds like Hal's plan would have killed me...a sure fire way to break a girl into more than two. Shattered into a million pieces more like... ' added 18th Mar 2010

simonedumergue 'The very reason why I decided not to do Hals Intermediate II programme - it looked lethal! Hmm - could do with a bit more sock advice myself. I only have one pair of 'proper' running socks - Hilly ones, monos I think they are. I never have a problem with blisters and I never notice my feet being hot so I never got into the whole sock thing, wearing normal cotton ones mostly with my fancy ones for long runs. But even with the fancy ones, my feet must have swelled up big time at London last year as I ended up with a black toenail on one, that later fell out. Quite common apparently - I felt like a well hard marathon runner :-) Don't forget that Eddie Izzard is doing is final stint of his marathon thing tonight!' added 18th Mar 2010

gunes 'I also have heard the advice to buy trainers half a size bigger than you need as your feet swell up when they are hot! As for socks I have just discovered Hilly twin skin Lite Plus, moisture management Anti-blister,they are not cheap but are great especially for long runs! Luckily I have never suffered with black toenails or ones that drop off,but have only recently started to get the odd blister,so there is always a first time, never say never :-) lol ' added 18th Mar 2010

ClareVR 'I too was told to get a half size bigger and my latest pair were 5.5 as opposed to 5 and I do think it has made a difference, especially as you say it is getting warmer and the runs longer! I use the Nike Elite socks with arch support and Dri-fit. Good running!' added 18th Mar 2010

Suziewee 'Thanks for all the sock advice! I will go and investigate what the running shop has to offer. Embarrassingly my trainers are half a size bigger than my normal shoes making them an 8, and that seems to be as big as ladies shoes go!!!' added 18th Mar 2010

Way_Too_Slow 'I'm retiring my old trainers in favour of a new pair (same model)as they are getting a bit old and I've got a bit of a niggle. Hopefully the bouncy new pair will help me get back on track! Have a good weekend.' added 18th Mar 2010

RuddysMarathonEffort 'Suzie, Thank you for your comment. I did offer to pose naked for some sponsorship. The ladies of blogland had 48 hours and came up with £0.00! I did think about Hal's intermediate but my 2008/09 achilles injury just wouldn't handle it, but good luck with 20 miles, I have a 20 mile race (loose term race when talking of my running) next weekend.' added 18th Mar 2010

glen_b 'I wear three different types of socks depending on the weather, and the outfit I am wearing!! They are all running one's though, I used to suffer with my feet, but since investing in proper running socks (of any description being honest), I have been fine. I also buy trainers half a size bigger - my feet are about as big as your's!!!' added 18th Mar 2010

Firefly123 'There's quite enough sock advice on here already, but far be it from me to miss out on inputting my two ha'pence worth! I use 100 mile socks - which are quite thick, but I changed after having got a couple of nasty blisters and I've not had one since. And trainers - well a half size bigger than shoe size. I hope your 20 mile run goes well on Sunday. ' added 18th Mar 2010

My socks are from decathlon and theyr called run 50 and they about 2.95 for 3 pairs, they keep my feet nice and cool and are really comfy :D well done on the 5 miles today and good luck for the weekends runs :D' added 19th Mar 2010
