Oh Bugger, This is Not Good

Jun1420116:41 p.m.

After cheerily blogging about my first race and how happy I was skipping about looking after the kids and running when I can with a 10k plan to start …. I’ve been a bit of a plonker!

On Thursday morning my husband wanted a lift to the station as he had a meeting in London (he missed the last one because I was 2 weeks late delivering his son and heir!). I had a 3 mile steady run on the plan so I thought I would nip out after the school run as he took middle daughter off to nursery, afterall it should only be half an hour. Lovely, it was a good plan. The boy had nodded off in his chair so I nipped out to hang a load of washing out and put the next load in. I then went to the garage to get the jogging buggy ready. I parked it on the drive while my mind wandered to which route I fancied. I shut the garage door, turned round to go back in the house to get the boy …. and crash. In my haste I hadn’t seen the bloomin’ enormous front wheel of the buggy sticking out and tripped straight over it. I went down like a sack of spuds. As soon as my left hand hit the the floor I heard the crack and knew it was broken. And guess who‘s left handed? <add any expletive you like>

I stood up to survey the damage … hold on I thought, I can move it maybe it’s okay and I can go for my run after all. I think I was in denial or shock or both! I stood there for a couple of minutes considering my next move. In that time the swelling started and the pain set in so I knew the game was up. I went back in the house for frozen peas wondering how to break the news to my husband on his return. My mind was churning a bit about the practicalities of looking after an oversized baby one handed?! After a while I realised my husband wasn’t home from a 15 minute round trip so I phoned him. It turned out had had a minor ding in his car. Turning into the lane into our village he met a minibus on his side of the road. It was only a small scrape but enough to render him in a less than jolly mood. He didn’t greet my news with much rapture either!

So another cancelled meeting in London because of me and a trip to casualty for an x-ray. The nurse saw me in my running kit hugging my left arm, while Vinnie was pushing Luke and I am sure she thought irresponsible mother! She was less than chirpy as she examined me. The x-ray showed a fracture of the distal radius (aka colles fracture). <More expletives>.

A temporary cast was put on and an appointment was made at the fracture clinic at Worcester hospital for the next day. The consultant ummed and aaahed and decided to plaster (a lovely purple cast -you get a choice of colours these days), and re-xray in a week to check the bones are still aligned. Then it should be 4 weeks in plaster. A bit frustrating, but as my eldest daughter said it could have been worse I could have broken both arms… or a leg….or died…. Children do enjoy investigating a good injury!

So here I am feeling a bit frustrated. Running wise it is a bit annoying that I have to take a break, but I have got up to 5k once so I can do it again. I was enjoying losing some pounds and feeling a bit less blobby but chocolate does so cheer me up. When the pain eases I shall do some power walking to try not to lose too much fitness. I daren’t risk running with the plaster on, I would be in big trouble if I tripped over again, and besides not being able to shower under it would not be too pleasant!

My main concerns at the moment are trying to keep the family in order with one serviceable arm. My husband is doing a grand job, even breaking his nappy changing duck! I do have to report though that sadly he let me down on the first night. When Luke woke for his feed at 4am Vinnie diligently passed him to me in the nursery and said for me to call him through the baby monitor when Luke had finished his feed. This I did but got no response. I spoke a bit louder, still nothing. I waited and waited. In the end I struggled to my feet, wrestled Luke into the cot and went to see where he was. Absolutely sparko and pushing the zeds. This derelicton of duty will be remembered!

Not being able to drive is a tough one. No doubt internet shopping will be my best friend. I have been overwhelmed by the offers of help from friends, especially with offers of taking and collecting middle daughter to and from nursery. Two people have even offered to do my ironing, which is bonus as I don’t do any. Well I gave up when pregnant and haven’t got back into it. Seeing as I am always covered in baby sick and the girls tip all their clothes out of the drawers whenever they are looking for something I don’t see the point.

Lets hope the next four weeks fly by!

  • Jenny1961 'I did chuckle about the ironing bit. Maybe you could really really milk this and get an army of friends and neighbours doing all the chores that you 'don't usually do!'. This is such a bummer for you though but time WILL past and healing WILL occur so don't fret too much! Gosh- something is really keeping your hubby from that meeting isn't it!' added 14th Jun 2011
