Overview

 StartWow! Wow #2! End

Hi, and welcome to the TISM Blog. My friends started to call me The Incredible Shrinking Man – hence the TISM tag…

The story is basically about getting to age 50, having a car crash, losing a lot of weight, and going on to running.

No proprietary ‘diets’, no surgical interventions, gastric bands etc – just a bit of will-power and determination, healthier eating habits, and latterly a bit of exercise eventually culminating in actually liking running….(or my personal interpretation of it.)

The DETAILS

Jan 2005 - 27.56 st.         Jan 2006     -19.21 st.         Jan 2007 -        14.41 st

Sep 2007 12 1/2 Stone thats 15 stone in less than 3 years

2007

Feb      Doctor challenged me to ‘do a run’ (not run a single pace for 25 years……)

Mar      ‘Ran’ on treadmill for first time – got an entry from The Prostate Cancer Charity for the Great North Run.

Started my very first ‘blog’, here on Realbuzz.

May     Deepings 10k  in  1:06:44

Jun       City of Manchester 10k  in  1:03:44

July      Thurlby 10k  in  1:06:16 (long hills)

Sep      GREAT NORTH RUN  in  2:24:11

Oct      Major surgery to remove 3Kgs of loose skin from abdomen

Nov     Second op to rectify infections from Oct op

Dec      Back in training for 2008 race entries (HOLD ON - who said anything about more races - this was supposed to be GNR and then back to 'normal'!!!

2008

Feb - Sleaford Half Marathon 2:18:27

Apr - Flora London Marathon 5:46:05

May - Edinburgh Marathon 5:54:57

Jun - Major Surgery to remove loose skin from thighs

Oct - Great North Run 2:32:16  /  Great Eastern Run 2:29:05

Nov - Athens Classic Marathon 5:58:57

Now, at 54, my philosophy is basically

- Try never to say No to something I haven't tried before. (Life is way too short for missed opportunities.)

- There are no reasons not to - only excuses.

- If it is to be, then it is up to ME

I’m always happy to share my experiences…. And I always try to keep smiling!

Dreadmills DO have their uses

Great little cardio session tonight! Although perhaps slightly naughty…..

Having watched the rugby, and been relieved I didn’t watch the Williams sisters lower their game as usual for a final, I decided it was time to head to the gym for a session, as I knew the place would be deserted early Saturday evening.

Opted for a decent cardio session, without any real masterplan. 2.5k on the rower at level 6, keeping just above 2:10 per 500m. Couple of sets of free weights and pec fly then went on to bike, 25 mins at level 13 with rpm over 90 – by now sweating buckets… Was going to have a crack at a x-trainer, but the dreadmill was calling…. Actually a flock of about 12 were calling… The organism bluffed that it would be a good idea, knowing I couldn’t run. It was gutted when I called its bluff, and got on a corner dreadmill “We are NOT allowed to run” it was screaming!! “Who said anything about running?”

Dreadmills DO have their uses after all!! 35 minutes, at 3.7mph fast walking, with incline at 8%, then 9%, and finally 10% The machine informed me I climbed 900 feet in total… reminded me of The Athens Classic Marathon…

Must admit that I felt really good at the end, as of I had done a good work out. Just time left for a quick SBS, then off home for a catch up.

#4 has dropped by on her travels, which is worth a very big smile tonight! She is only here a few hours… but what the heck?

She has a busy summer ahead, she and her mates are doing a performance of the Tempest at Stratford on Avon for the RSC, then she is off to the Edinburgh Fringe where she is involved in three different shows for a while.

Hope everyone has a great time at the City of Manchester 10k, really sorry I can't run it this year.

So as I said, big smile tonight!!

What shows will she be appearing in the Fringe? I plan to go over to Edinburgh - it's only half an hour away or so!
Good to read that you're still working out.

well done to daughter and to you for such a good workout. I went to gym yesterday as well but could only manage 30 mins on the bike before boredom set in and I left!

Trust me you can get used to the dreadmill, I have just gone back to using it and find I missed it more than I thought I would.

Great work out and I know what you mean about the Williams sisters game - I listened to it rather than watch it.

Good luck to your daughter in her different performances.

Well done for making the effort. It's more than I have been doing!

I'll bet your a very proud dad with regards to #4's performances. Will you be going to see any of them?

Good effort and well done for having shown restraint on the dreadmill.
