  • Christmas in Capri and the Commonwealth Games......

I have just finished all my Christmas shopping. Buying presents for people starts out being really good fun and exciting, but you soon realise how stressful it is. It's not only deciding what to get people, but wondering whether they actually like it. What I always do is buy the things that they are bound to use, so they might be boring, but will definitely be used. Training is going really well. Today I ran and felt the best I have since I started the sprint training a month ago. The squad and I were doing sets of 30 meter sprints out of the blocks. I have been watching old videos on YouTube of Maurice Greene who is one of my sprinting idols and is one of the best starters who ever lived, if not the best in my eyes. I have always found that I respond well to visual demonstration.

This has really improved my starts already, and it is giving me huge confidence going into my first race, which will be in early January. I did an interview with David Ferguson who writes for the Scotsman newspaper this week. I know David well through my rugby days and I think he's a great guy. I admire his enthusiasm for sports too. He wrote a great piece on me, which I was really happy with. The article was based on the fact that Scotland has announced a small group of athletes who are hopeful of competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014. I obviously wasn't announced in the squad, but he just really wanted to see what my long term goals were in athletics and whether the Commonwealth Games might be a realistic one. I told him that I wasn't even considering such a thing, and would be daft to, seeing as I haven't even run yet. The simple truth of the matter is I feel incredibly lucky to have been giving another chance in sport.

A lot of people and athletes don't get that. The thought of competing again is enough for me. I am going to give it everything I have until the summer and then assess where I am. Only in my dreams can I see myself putting on a Scotland jersey again, but I will certainly give it a go. Kelly and I are off to Capri in Italy for a week over Christmas. It is supposed to be amazing and we are both really looking forward to it. The food is meant to be out of this world and we will hopefully get a chance to see some upcoming films that haven't been released yet. Capri, Hollywood 2011 will be chaired by the poet of Italian music, Gino Paoli and the Italian-American actress Melissa Leo (Oscar winner in 2010 for The Fighter). The Capri event will also feature a tribute to the legendary Grace Kelly, the late beloved Princess of Monaco and a tribute to the British choreographer and filmmaker Lindsay Kemp.

In terms of social activities, Capri-Hollywood will host the International symposium against discrimination and racism promoted in association with Unicef. The event will be produced with the support of the General Directorate of Cinema of the Ministry of Culture, the Campania Region and the Chamber of Commerce of Naples, in cooperation with Hogan, Alitalia, Eni. As well as the ceremonies for the awarding of the much sought-after Capri Awards that will go to actors, writers and filmmakers, it will be a great chance to meet some interesting people. And also take my mind off all the training I’ve been doing! Have fun.
