Brighton Marathon

Apr21201011:14 p.m.

What a lovely day for a run.It was a shame that all roads to the start were closed to public transport which meant a quick breakfast at 7 and a 3 mile walk from the hotel to the start at preston park.I had slept reasonably well the previous night and felt today was going to be a good one.The start was delayed for about 15 minutes then off we went.My plan for this race was to run the race at 11 min miles all the way round.First 5 miles managed to average around 10.50 had to keep checking as i kept getting carried away with the crowds.Loads of people passed me in the first five miles.Kept telling myself to stick to the plan. The route enabled the family and friends see me at four points around the course which was nice.I was ambling along nicely up till mile 21 then my ankle started aching folllowed by my calf then my hip.Slightly adjusted my posture and most the pain seemed to to disappear. The hip pain improved but only after slowing down a little.I continued on determined to maintain the pace at 11 mins but this slipped slightly. The last part of the course was along the beech front and there was lots of support, managed to up the speed a bit after the 25 mile marker but ankle, calf and hip started to ache again.Slowed down to ease the pain and once i could see the finish line put in a final sprint effort.Finished in a time of 4.46.47 a PB. Averaging 11 min miles and 27 mins faster than my london time of last year.I am very happy with that.

Few points to note i clocked up far less miles this year than last year, had next to no injuries this year, no ipod this year which meant really enjoyed the run this time.

Have entered ballot for next year so fingers crossed.Good luck to all running on sunday enjoy it !!!.

  • edwards_pk 'A massive well done Tunde, always nice to beat that PB, know what you mean about injuries, I've also cut down my weekly training (distance & sessions per week), before I was running 6 x a week, every week, picked up so many injuries, now its a max of 4 which has done the trick...touch wood.' added 22nd Apr 2010
