Paula Radcliffe!
Sep0920099:10 a.m.
I was just too excited to hear that Paula will be running in the Birmingham half, so I wrote it in my diary to travel up there to spectate (with camera)! However I might be working at the Royal Parks Half on that day, picking up the ill people from the finish line and taking them away to where they don't make the event look bad. Ha. Ironic really.
I've decided not to run dublin! I took a week off after the 20mile run/nottinghill carnival exhaustion due to the plantar fascia and by sunday it seemed ok. I could only elicit pain by pointing my toe really hard. So I went on a 7 miler, which was quite nice for the first 3 miles or so. Then it all came back, all over the bottom of my foot and also, I must have tendonitis in the top of my foot as well because that hurt a lot too. So my first mile was run in a speedy(ish) 8.15 then all around 9 min miles, then the last mile the foot was excruciating and that was 9.30min/mile. So run average 9min/mile exactly.
Not important really. I clearly need a good couple of weeks off to rest it and stretch the stupid foot. I'm just not motivated at the moment to work through this with Dublin in mind. It would involve squeezing in long runs, cross-training and general enthusiasm about running another marathon with sub-optimal conditions/training. Plus, it's expensive, so if I don't run I can save the £80 flights and £140 accom and possible buy an opthalmoscope. Which I really want! How geeky.
Gutted, of course. But I'm really stressed and unmotivated at the moment and having an injury was just the icing on the cake, so now the pressure's off. Oh, ha, last week on Wed afternoon (which students have off, even medical students!) and I was getting ready for work (summariser at doctor surgery) thinking how tired i was when my boss rang, who works at a few surgeries in london, saying another one needed a summariser, for £2 more per hour, and would i like to do it? Wed afternoons. So I said yes, even though it's further away, so NOW i have that job wed afternoons and have to squeeze in the other surgery's work on other weekdays? Not sure how that's going to work, yesterday I got there at 6pm and was turfed out at 7 as they wanted to close up.
Anyway, thanks for the comments on the last post, much appreciated. I haven't got round yet to checking everyone who's commented's blog, but hopefully i've caught you all as i have been commenting on the blogs appearing on the mainpage. :)

I don't know how you fit everything in to your busy life and train as well that shows real determination! Keep it going!' added 9th 九月 2009

running_chick 'Awwww, tough decision but it sounds like the right one. You don't want to struggle through a marathon and I think you need a bit of a rest for a while to let your body recover. Why don't you start planning for one in the spring. I'm thinking of doing Paris for the second time if you fancy joining. xx' added 9th 九月 2009

daveredrock 'Bummer about your injury but well done on making the right decision. As you've said, you're in this marathon to get a clean run and do a good time so what's the point in pushing through with an injury just to finish. It sounds like you're working too hard tough so no Dublin marathon, but I prescribe a pint of Guinness to sort out your weary spirit. ' added 9th 九月 2009

You can't run a marathon unless you're 100% commited and I know from expirience how painful and hard to shift plantar fascia problems can be. Take it easy for a while and you'll be back stronger!' added 9th 九月 2009

markinthepark 'I think that's a very sensible decision, it's hard when you have to do gym stuff as a substitute and then pray that the long run goes well each week, like treading on egg-shells. Maybe have a rest and do a springy marathon instead.. plenty of room on the Road To Brighton Express. If you are working at the Royal Parks Half and see a collapsed person in red shoes please be sure to pick me up and send me to that private suffering place. Take care. ' added 9th 九月 2009

Nick 'It's a shame you have to miss Dublin - it's always a great weekend - but it's probably wise if your body is feeling the strain. I'm sure you just need a little bit of rest. You're young and your body should heal relatively quickly.' added 9th 九月 2009

judith 'That plantar fissy thing is a nasty injury. Sensible decision about Dublin. As Pete said it'll be there next year. We have a friend who did his last year just before New York carried on did New York won't rest and is still suffering now. Keeps going for physio and says he keeps being told it's okay to run (not that we believe him). Now it's affecting his achilles but he's off the the GNR a week on Sunday. Can't get through to him that he needs to rest. REst won't do you any harm and you'll benefit quicker.' added 9th 九月 2009

Sometimes a rest is more beneficial that struggling through something. Just signed up for B'ham so might see you there. Take carex' added 9th 九月 2009

crooxi 'There's always that mixture of disappointment and relief in Situations like that: disappointment in having to abandon something you've planned, but relief that you don't have to attempt the impossible. (Rather familiar with that feeling myself this year.) Sounds like a wise decision to me though - you've got so much else going on in your life at the moment, injuries on top of that, and plenty of time in the future to plan and train for that Perfect Marathon.' added 10th 九月 2009

I've got one like that in a couple of weeks, go for a 25 mile walk in the Cotswolds on my own (partner has bailed) or go to work and earn some much needed spondies ..... ?
