VLM 2012 - I'm in!!!

Sep3020118:12 a.m.

My 4th application for VLM has been accepted.  Looked in my little post box yesterday and saw the magazine - at that point I knew I was in as the jacket would never have fitted in the box (I don't have a normal letter box in my front door).  Much excitement rushing to find the key and check if it really was what I thought.....  and YES it was the 'acceptance' letter.  I screamed and laughed like a loon! Glad that was my reaction not dread as it is really quite daunting!!!!

At the mo I'm only doing one short run a week, I do lots of other exercise as a Fitness Instructor but not so much running currently as I have done in the past.  I do 5 x spin classes a week, Legs, Bums n tums and a stretchy class so my CV fitness is good just need to find my running legs again.  I'm worried with my job that I'll only be able to do one long training run at the weekend and maybe one short one in the week.  Has anyone ever done a marathon with that sort of training?? I'd really appreciate some advice if anyone can help???

It does depend on what else you are doing of course but there is no exact read over from general fitness to running strength.' added 30th Sep 2011

  • aphid 'Congratulations! Have to agree with Keith that you might need to do a bit more than one long/one short run tho. Most plans I look at show 3 -5 runs a week and I think even 3 is pushing it a bit. I am sure you will find a way to fit it all in - maybe use the treadmill at the gym instead of a spin class or two? Good luck - look forward to seeing how you get on!x' added 30th Sep 2011

  • alisonamber 'Thanks for all the congrats :) Hmmm a little worried - will see how it goes, am going to increase my running now up to xmas then start a real plan in January. Unfortunately (Aphid) I can't stop spinning cos i'm the instructor lol! Although, one of my class members said it would be ok for me to take the class from the treadmill, but when i pointed out that on the treadmill i would have my back to the spinners he said they wouldn't mind looking at my bum - not helpful!!!' added 30th Sep 2011

  • janisbrown 'Congratulations on getting a place. I have managed 4 marathons with 3 training runs a week. I think you will be ok with that many spinning classes your legs will be really strong. I would suggest that 1 run per week you work on speed one week and the 2nd week work on hills then build up your long runs every week. Good luck with the training.' added 30th Sep 2011

  • alisonamber '@janisbrown - thank you! Do you think treadmill training for the short one is enough, or should be outdoors as well? I'm in the gym at work, and I don't currently run on the treadmill but am thinking if I can do a few on my lunchbreaks if the weather's bad - for my hill and speed work only and make the long run outdoors?? So many questions/ideas in my poor head...... ' added 2nd Oct 2011
