well, I did it!

May2220088:49 p.m.

hi everyone

I know this is being said a few days after the event, but I had to get on a plane to the US straight after the run.

I had an amazing time, the buzz of the event was really something else, I had no idea it would be like that.

As anyone who reads my blogs knows I've been struggling to run for a 5l without stopping, so was really worried about getting to 10k in anything under 1hr30.

Well, on the day, I was so wrapped up in the atmosphere, i didn't remember that I needed walk breaks until I got to the first water station!!  Thus proving that the walk breaks are laziness on my part

At some point after the 7k mark i was feeling a bit like it was a slog, there didn't seem to be any spectators, or brass bands or radio stations and  I think I missed 8k marker - all these things had a mental impact.  7k is also the distance I have been doing in training so I guess I got to my bodies natural marker.  Oh and I also felt a blister start on my toes!

Anyway, as I turned a corner and saw the Hilton in the distance, and then the 9k marker my thought was 'F-Me, I'm going to do it! I'm actually going to do it!'  And this spurred me on, even speeded me up, the final 1k seemed as easy as the first.

I sprinted the final 100m and have never felt better.

I burst into tears as I crossed the line.  It was a mix of elation and feeling So proud of myself.... and thoughts of my sister, for whom I did all of this.  I miss her and wish she had been alive to see this.

To all the runners who did the Bupa 10k...well done....it was amazing to have been part of such an amazing event with you.  Oh and see you in May 2009?

  • Jonners 'WELL DONE !!! Your sister would have been proud of you and you can very very proud of yourself. Next year will be much easier you'll know what to expect.. I know that feeling of prue emotion crossing that line. So it wasn't just me that missed the markers, I didn't see the 6k mark saw the 8k cause there was also a 5 mile marker virtually together. I liked the 10k marker the best!!!! Looking at your blog I see you are doing the City of Manchester run in July be interesting to see what you think of that. Keep up with running, like the other first timers you've done brilliantly. A couple of questions.1) Have you enjoyed the whole experience? and 2) was it harder or easier than you thought it would be? I would be very interested to know...' added 22nd May 2008

  • Runnernotajogger 'I'm really glad that you had a good race and for such a great cause. I'm sure that your sister was with you every step of the way, especially when you got to the last 1k. I think the majority of us have cried when crossing a finish line, it's relief, a sense of achievement, or just glad that the race is over. Well done you and I hope you manage loads more. • jamieB 'Hello Ange! I've been really happy seeing my mates doing it at the GMR this year but your run gave me the most pleasure. I remember your efforts at your first AlexPark and I knew you'd do the GMR because you have the spirit inside to make it against all odds. You have done brilliant!!! Well done and keep doing/beating it! xxxxx' added 23rd May 2008
