Don't tell mum, she will slap my legs!

So, I have decided that my right leg IT band does not belong to me and it must have been swapped at birth or something..(mum, what did you swap it for, come on, own up?  I hope you got big bucks for MY IT Band and not just a sherbert dip and some flying saucers!)  Why do I say this?  Well, it definitely has not got the Kelly Frew stubborn mentality of "yeah, ok, so it is a little tough, but a bit of pain won't kill ya!"

After my 8 miler on Weds I knew I would have to fit my LSR in on Thursday night as life is soooo busy and I was ready and raring to go.  It was a night's running of firsts really:

1)  First time I ran in the rain - very refreshing!

2)  First time I scared myself silly running in the dark over Orton Lock and down by the Rowing Lake thinking it would be fine that it was PITCH BLACK and then looking behind me every 10 seconds looking for the bogey monster!

3) First and last time I promised myself NEVER to try and run down by the rowing lake again in the dark.  It was VERY silly, I am lucky nothing happened and yes mum, I give you permission to slap my legs if I do it again!

4) First time I realised that trying to find a well lit 18 mile route around Peterborough is near enough impossible!

5) First time I have ever got bored of my own company and my own thoughts and ramblings.... living alone I normally LOVE my own company, but I even bored myself last night! haha

So, back to the adopted IT band..... I was 15 miles into the run and on the stretch home and it then hit me like a machete being driven into my knee.  I informed it to GET A GRIP and carry on as I only had 3 miles to go, but it was like a 5 year old who had had its ball taken off it and threw a massive strop telling me it was going no further...

So, deep joy at 9pm last night I walked the last 3 miles through Yaxley and home with my tail between my legs.......

I am not too worried, I had pushed it too much doing the 8 miler and then the 18 consecutively, but time was against me.  I am sat here now at work and it feels OK, just needs some TLC really.  I have had a strict word with the suspect IT band in question and told it that if it is going to be part of the Frew residence it needs to buck up its ideas or it is going on the transfer list!

An interesting 15 mile run really though, I cannot complain!  On a very serious note though I am in deep mourning today as I dropped somewhere on route my comfort pink woolly hat that I take with me and I put on as a comfort blanket when the runs get tough or I am doing a very early morning.  I BEGGED my little legs to go back and retrace my steps, but they were having none of it..... boooooooo, how can I go on running now!!! That hat has been everywhere with me!! haha

RIP favourite pink woolly hat.  You will be missed.  Cool

Good that you stopped and walked, but it is more than likely to come on again when you do your next long one. Have you got a foam roller? They are fantastic for sorting out ITB issues and only cost about 10 or 12 quid for the half length which is all you need. I had a bad ITB issue last year (got the point I couldn't run past 3 miles) - had a lot of physio that sorted it. My ITB and knee started playing up again recently but I can't afford physio this time around so I bought the foam roller and have been assaulting my ITB with it and it is working an absolute treat with banishing all of the issues! Good luck with getting it sorted and sorry if I gave advice that you didn't ask for or particularly want - I just know how horrid ITB is! Sorry to hear the favourite pink hat has gone :-(' added 19th Mar 2010

  • STUBLACK ' Whatever you do don't get Simone to order you a new pink hat, it might not gert here before winter. You did the right thing walking, having sufferred ITBitis myself but I've read a bit about them and they're not nice, I'm sure you'll get good advice like Simones on how to combat it. You may find your hat next time you do that run ' added 19th Mar 2010

  • glen_b 'I have never suffered with my ITB (yet?!), but I must admit, it seems like you did the right thing, and let's face it, 15 miles is still a pretty good effort for a Thursday night (I did 16 and it was a struggle towards the end). Simone has spoken lots about her ITB issues, and seems to know the injury inside out, so I would take her advice on board. I reckon 15 miles after a day of work, tiredness creeping in, 8 miles the day before, must count as a 20 miler on a Saturday morning, refreshed from a day off work, sun shining etc etc.......' added 19th Mar 2010

  • Ruth22 'make sure you take care of that IT band. Take time off if you need to - getting to the start in one piece is more important than fitting in every single run on the schedule. And bummer about the wooly hat!' added 19th Mar 2010
