That's another fine mess you've got yourself into Frew!

Today was my LSR of the week and I as I really wanted to run between 13/14 miles I decided to run to my gym and back, which I know is 7 miles each way. So, as the City of Peterborough was awakening to a foggy and dreary start I made good speed through the town centre towards one of Mr Bannatynes little empires!
My route choice unfortunately left alot to be desired and took me alongside some very busy roads through the town, and as I was attempting to take deep breaths hoping for fresh air, my lungs unfortunately were filled with exhaust fumes and the stale air which surrounded the many takeaways and pubs along my route. (lush hey!) I also managed to stumble onto a cycle route which took you under the street and yes a did give out a little girly yelp when two lads passed me drinking from lager cans at 9:30am and as I looked back to check they were still walking, they had stopped in their tracks and were watching me on my way!
As I approached the gym in Werrington, I decided to take a different route home and picked up on the route I had done previously on The Great Eastern Run. The roads were much quieter and I had found a good stride, which I was loving!
Unfortunately, I have felt a twinge at the side of my knee niggling away all week and as I reached the Town Bridge in Peterborough, around a mile and 1/4 from home my knee decided enough was enough. Walked for approximately half a mile and then managed to run the rest, but now feeling it tonight.
So, I am going to look at investing in a new pair of trainers and having looked up runners knee on the internet, I will also incorporate some exercises to try and strengthen my Iliotibial Band, which I think is causing the stress.
Still feeling very positive though as I did a good 1 hour 50 mins of running before my knee started playing up and stamina wise I felt great and could have carried on going for a good while yet!

andrewrutter 'Sounds like you had a good run today. Hope the knee is not too bad - remember RICE. I have struggled with my knees and ankles but after seeing a physio I learnt that the problem is my back. I was very stiff in my upper body and was not able to absorb the shock of running long distances properly - so I had a very sore achilles. The physio sessions worked and I now have at least one session a week focussed on increasing back strength and flexibility. Hope your knee is better soon. ' added 7th Feb 2010
