Pre-race ritual
Tuesday saw me get home from work, walk my dog and run 4 miles all before it got dark! I was impressed and very happy that the nights are getting lighter. The route was hard on the feet as i had to wear my road shoes on my trail route which has a lot of large stones to run on where they are building houses. The good news is that my new trail shoes have arrived in time for Cartmel on Saturday
Last night was track session which I found unusually tough. Basically we ran at our Vdot pace and alternated with jogging each time our coach blew the whistle. The whistles varied between 2minutes and 30 seconds and it was pretty exhausting. We share the track with Durham Tri club and one of their members runs a sports nutrition business so he gave me some advice (and goodies!) about pre-race fuelling. Apparrently my coffee ritual isn't ideal as caffeine has to be at a measured amount or it becomes an inhibitor rather than a stimulator?! Also he really doesn't like lucozade and recommended switching to highfive, torq, or sis for a more natural/effective result. It all got pretty technical but I'll give my new gels/drinks a go on Saturday and see how I perform. I'm not fussed about my race time at this event as its purely for the enjoyment so we'll see how it goes! Forecast is rain and its a notoriously muddy course so should be fun!

malcolms 'Wow! A scientific pre race ritual! My pre race ritual is one of abject fear that I am so utterly underprepared and will fail miserably to finish. That and plenty of loo paper and finding the VERY back of the field.' added 18th Mar 2010
