X-rays and Ortho Consultation
Sep2920098:13 p.m.
Three days post broken toe and twelve days before the marathon, today I went to the ortho doc for a consultation.
After looking at my X-rays, he said, "The bad news is, it's broken. The good news is, it's your little toe."
"So when can I run?" I asked.
"Before you start running, you need to start walking." He advised that it is okay to start gradually putting my weight on it again. "Wear your boot until you can comfortably wear a shoe," he suggested. He also buddy-taped my toe.My toe is crooked but the doc says only in rare cases do they ever surgically straighten little toes. He said it should heal just fine on its own without long-term problems.
So, here's the plan:
1. I'm ditching the crutches!
2. I'm taking pain meds. Doc advised me to stop taking ibuprofen because it interferes with healing (I'd never heard this before.) He wrote me a script for percocet and said taking one every 6 hours will help control my pain while my activity level increases.
3. Ice - this promotes vaso-dilation even better than heat. Vaso-dilation will facilitate healing.
4. Time to cross train!
5. I'm taking things one day at a time - I've got a lot to think and pray about!
Here are my x-rays. The fracture starts at the pen tip and ends at the cursor arrow. My bone is compressed and offset to the right:
