Hi Chicago Marathon Friends!!!!

I have always run for fun and exercise, but this will be my first marathon and I am terribly excited! I have begun training mostly by swimming (great leg workout!) and some treadmill running (although I absolutely cannot wait to run OUTSIDE). I would like to get an ipod and run with music asap. I am a classical pianist/cellist so I have absolutely zero knowledge of popular music, and Beethoven doesn't quite cut it when running. I'm not big on heavy metal or rap, but something that inspires energy and has a good beat would be awesome.
If you have a minute, please tell me what you like to listen to while you run!

Happy training!

  • drakethecat 'Some of my favorite music for running: Wilco's CD Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (with bonus tracks can suck up about five miles) Lucinda Williams, Live at the Fillmore The Beatles "Love" CD (the soundtrack of a Las Vegas show; alternative mixes of their classic songs) Lauryn Hill, "The Mideducation of Lauryn Hill" (hip-hop -- but very smart. Don't be scared!) Neil Young's Life Rust or various other discs Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers and on and on and on. There are some music mixes where every song conforms to a certain cadance that theoretically helps the runner keep up the right pace (fast; medium; slowish). Maybe check on the Runners World web site? But I've listened to some slower stuff, like folkies Joni Mitchell and Gillian Welch, and have still been able to put one foot in front of another with no problems. I had a great music mix that I used for races (typically the last 15 or so miles of the marathon) that started off mellow and built to be more rowdy. Lost it when my iPod was stolen and now can only remember about half of the songs. Let me know if you want more info!' added 26th Jan 2008

  • Rob_Barber 'Only important thing is that it makes you feel good. I listen to ALL types of music, but I'm no trainspotter type when it comes to names of bands/tracks. For running, I would say the beats and rhythms on pretty much any dance / house / disco compilation will compliment your natural rhythms, whenever I listen to Leftfield in my car I notice the whole world moves to the timing of their music, or try out bands with good guitar like Kaiser Chiefs, Hard Fi, Foo Fighters, Editors, Stranglers, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and even though you don't like rap, Outkast have some good stuff, unusual, but good, Damien Marley has some cool new reggae beats....' added 26th Jan 2008

  • kmd3369 'Well, I can't vouch for their popularity, but here's what I've got on my current iPod running mix, for a nice, slow, easy pace. It's a bit heavy on a couple of artists, but with the shuffle feature, you never know what's coming. Banana Pancakes- Jack Johnson My Winding Wheel- Ryan Adams Constellations- Jack Johnson Come Away With Me- Norah Jones The One I Love- David Gray You turn Me On I'm a Radio- Joni Mitchell Symbol In My Driveway- Jack Johnson When the Stars Go blue- Ryan Adams Mission in the Rain- Jerry Garcia Band The Harder They Come- Jerry Garcia Band When I Paint My Masterpiece- Grateful Dead Tumbling Dice- Rolling Stones Bull Rush- Paul Weller (ok, this one's a bit faster tempo, but hey you don't want to fall asleep!) Out on the Weekend- Neil Young The Scientist- Coldplay I Can See Clearly Now- Hothouse Flowers Oh My Sweet Carolina- Ryan Adams Building a Mystery- Sarah Mclachlan Helplessly Hoping- Crosby, Stills and Nash Hoodoo Gurus- Bittersweet (this one's quite a bit faster than the rest, but I dig it) Happy running!' added 27th Jan 2008

  • kmd3369 'Lol.. the Hoodoo Gurus are a throw back to my college radio days. Wasn't supposed to play them as they were actually quite popular back in the day and we were supposed to be 100% alternative. But there comes a time in every college dj's life, when he or she says "If I hear Skinny Puppy one more time, I'm going to puke. Time to put on a cool band". For an up tempo faster run, I'd play almost any selection from either Mars needs Guitars, or Blow Your Cool, any day!' added 28th Jan 2008
