You have to start somewhere

Nov0720115:02 p.m.

2011 has been a poor year for me running wise, twisted ankles, illnesses during marathon training, it has been a tough year at work (but then again, I doubt it has been a doddle for anyone over the past couple of years), even a filling for a tooth led to the extraction from hell and hardly any running for the fortnight, but I have decided the New Year regime starts 2 months early, and I will then be able to hit the New Year running, quite literally!

3 runs in 3 days is a start, the first one being a very very slow 2 miler with my 7 year old son Luke, who did a sponsored run for his cubs group, so 2 miles in 13 minutes, and yes, I am a proud dad! He is also doing superbly at swimming and golf lessons at the moment, he obviously does not take after me....

Yesterday was a 6 miler done first thing at 8:58 pace, not sure how I managed to keep it so quick, I didn't realise until mile 3 how fast I was actually going, and once I checked my Garmin I decided to try and keep the pace up, and it ended up being a very tough but satisfying work out! And all after an eventful Bonfire Night where we ended up befriending a stray black Labrador, it was petrified the poor thing, so at 9.30 in the evening, just as we got home and I was looking forward to a few nice glasses of alcohol, I had to venture out to the back of beyond (well, the Barnsley/Sheffield border, which really is the back of beyond), to drop the poor little thing off at the dog warden, so they could hopefully reunite her with her owners.

This morning was a steady 4 miler in the much colder conditions, more of a recovery after yesterday really (I have probably only run longer than 6 miles 4 or 5 times since the middle of the year - LSRs seem so long ago these days!), so a pace of 9:24 was achieved today. I intend to do some sort of speed sessions tomorrow, as I work towards a PW a week on Sunday at the Barnsley 10k (which I need to remember to enter this week to save myself a couple of quid - can you tell I am a Yorkshireman?).

Speaking of the colder weather, has anyone noticed that the weather today obviously had that Monday feeling, it is almost as though it couldn't be bothered. It could not be bothered to get light, up here it kept trying to rain, but again, just could not be bothered and kept starting and stopping with drizzle.

Happy Trails........

  • crooxi '2 miles in 13 minutes?! - that's not slow at all! You really have had a bad time of it in 2011, haven't you? - let's hope 2012 is a big improvement. Sheffield/Barnsley border is definitely the back of beyond! Did you hear if doggie and owner were reunited? - you do realize you'll end up adopting it otherwise?!' added 7th Nov 2011

  • Firefly123 'Yes, the day definitely had that Monday feeling - even in London, Well done with getting back to it, Glen. You may be surprised how well you run in the 10K race. It sounds to me as if you've still got a good bit of speed in those legs. ' added 7th Nov 2011

  • simonedumergue 'YOu sound like you are about where I was a year ago - it does come back eventually I promise! Having said that I haven't done a run longer than 10 miles for months, as haven;'t had the need but nothing like a looming marathon to start making the really long LSRs a reality. Fingers crossed you stay injury free for a while!!' added 16th Nov 2011
