Overview

I'm attempting to run/hobble/crawl my way through the London Marathon on April 26th 2009 on behalf of Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA).

ACTSA campaigns with the people of Southern Africa as they strive to build a better future. Working for peace, democracy and development across the region, ACTSA is the successor organisation to the Anti-apartheid movement.

Until this October I had never run more than 5km in my life so 26.2 miles is something of a personal challenge! I've set up this blog in the unlikely event that some people may be interested in tracking my progress (and pain!) as I train and fundraise my way through the next few weeks and months.

If you'd like to sponsor me please visit fundraising page - www.justgiving.com/hannahrunsthemarathon. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me as ACTSA gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

My race log so far is:

27/07/08 - Dorney Lake Cancer Research Race for Life, 22 mins

26/10/08 - Brighton seafront Cancer Research 10k, 45 mins

2/11/08 - Marlow half marathon: 1hr 48mins 26 secs. 364th place overall, 47th out of the women

14/12/08 - Bedford half marathon: 1hr 38mins 49 secs. 363rd place overall, 41st out of the women

22/02/09 - Brighton half marathon, 1hr34mins17secs. 425th overall, 40th out of the women

15/03/09 - Hastings half marathon, 1hr36mins37secs. 430th place  overall, 39th out of the women.

bored!

Saw a sports physio yesterday. Not Kader this time - couldn't get hold of him, maybe still in Paris - but Mitchel Phillips, based at David Lloyd at the marina. The good news is he reckons it's all down to my fleixibility - i.e. i'm not very flexible but that's something i can work on. Particulary glutes, quads and calves. Hmm, basically my whole legs! He gave me a massage, made me do some stretches, and showed me some others i can do at home with this foam roller thing - a big tube of foam that cost £15 and you stretch by rolling different parts of your body on it - but it kind of squashes the muscle stretching it deeper than you would doing normal stretches - feels kinda like a deep tissues massage. Like the doctor, he said I need to rest it for bit, maybe do a bit of cycling before easing back into running, and should be ok for the marathon. Phew! It was such a relief to hear that!! I will be very good and stretch religiously now. It feels better again so far today. Still uncomfortable, but not as painful, so fingers crossed.

Chris has gone running - the final 20miler before the taper.  I should be there too, didn't want to start my taper a week earlier. Grrr. sooo bored! Can't remember what I used to do on sunday mornings before running ;-(

I think i'll bake a cake.

happy easter people!

Fingers crossed - sounds like you should be OK for the big day as long as you follow orders!

big well done for being sensible and giving it the rest it needs before the big day. a 20 miler 2 weeks before wouldn't be that useful anyway as it takes 3 weeks for yout body to show the effects of it (new capillaries and mitochondria etc). hope the cake was yummy!
