Overview

I'm attempting to run/hobble/crawl my way through the London Marathon on April 26th 2009 on behalf of Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA).

ACTSA campaigns with the people of Southern Africa as they strive to build a better future. Working for peace, democracy and development across the region, ACTSA is the successor organisation to the Anti-apartheid movement.

Until this October I had never run more than 5km in my life so 26.2 miles is something of a personal challenge! I've set up this blog in the unlikely event that some people may be interested in tracking my progress (and pain!) as I train and fundraise my way through the next few weeks and months.

If you'd like to sponsor me please visit fundraising page - www.justgiving.com/hannahrunsthemarathon. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me as ACTSA gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

My race log so far is:

27/07/08 - Dorney Lake Cancer Research Race for Life, 22 mins

26/10/08 - Brighton seafront Cancer Research 10k, 45 mins

2/11/08 - Marlow half marathon: 1hr 48mins 26 secs. 364th place overall, 47th out of the women

14/12/08 - Bedford half marathon: 1hr 38mins 49 secs. 363rd place overall, 41st out of the women

22/02/09 - Brighton half marathon, 1hr34mins17secs. 425th overall, 40th out of the women

15/03/09 - Hastings half marathon, 1hr36mins37secs. 430th place  overall, 39th out of the women.

still frustrated!

So the doc and physio said rest it for a week, so i actually gave it 9 days. Then thought it was better so went for a gentle 3 miles on thursday and - arrgh!- it played up again ater that. Gutted. So haven't run since. Was supossed  to be doing my last longish 12mile run with the group this morning but decided against it in case it makes it worse. Will just give it as much chance to get better this week and not do any running - maybe a bit of cycling - until the big day now. It's a pretty scary thought to do 26 miles after absolutely nothing for 2 weeks but people say you can't lose all that much fitness in two weeks, and i would rather it flares up on the day and then just grin and bear it than make it worse this week and totally screw my chances for sunday. Have just resigned myself to not getting the good time I've been hoping for - there will be other marathons for that!

Oooh ... this time next week....!!!!

You never know another week's rest and it might be good onthe day. Or if it does flare up you'll grin and bear it anyway. I bet you still get a great time! But yeah - frustrating not to run for 2 weeks though, but you'll be fine. Argh this time ne xt week! (it better be cooler)

At this stage rest is best and you have already conditioned yourself with miles in the bag.Its a case of doing the best with what you have got. I am sure you will do well on the day.

I'm sure that you fitness levels will get you around, good plan to carry on resting, I'm in the same boat was hoping for a good finishing time this year, not to be what with the injuries putting me back, I will be happy just to get around at a slower pace, should give me a chance to take it all in, in slow time..

Hey - i am in the same boat as you and i think many others too. I find myself worrying about sunday but then realise there is no point as its completely out of our control. One bonus is we'll be VERY well rested come sunday. Keep being good!

well I did the Loch Ness run on the back of a few halfs and a couple of 10k's, albeit in a long time, and judging by your times you will be fine.
