Race for Life I’ve run a half marathon

Hi

I have always dreamt of running the London Marathon, ever since I watched the very first one back in 1981, though I had never really been into sports, much less running.  But every time I watched the London Marathon, I would think ‘I want to do that’ and continued to dream that one day I would run it.

This year I was lucky (or unlucky!) to get a ballot place on the 2nd attempt in the London Marathon and my dream is now a reality.

I started running about 5 years ago when I ran a Race for Life.  I joined a running club and the following year competed in the Fleet Half Marathon with a time of 2h 22min, not bad for a novice runner.

My running has just been ticking over for the last few years while I was studying for a part time MSc.  Now I need to up the ante.  Over the summer I worked at improving my general fitness at a gym & now I'm starting to increase my weekly mileage before attempting any long runs.  I have had a minor set back & sprained my ankle the day before I was due to run the Fleet 10k.  I'm back on track now & this blog is to keep everyone up to date with my pain & progress.

I'm raising money for a local charity the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham. The Hospice is the only adult hospice serving West Surrey and North East Hampshire.  All their services are free of charge, but it costs over £10,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care. Every day the Hospice supports over 100 patients and carers in their own homes, in the community and at the Hospice.  The Hospice relies heavily on the support and generosity of the local community.

New gym program-cream crackered!

Had my gym program reviewed today.  Took along my November issue of Runner's World & we've adapted the Boost Endurance excersises in the The X Factor article for use in the gym.  I'm doing the runs on the treadmill, will probably use the interval or variety setting at my next session.  The press ups are using a Swiss ball against the wall (I couldn't do them normally), the bodyweight squats are also using a Swiss ball because I couldn't get my technique right & the pull ups are using the lat pull down machine.

I think I will know I've done them tomorrow!  My thighs & butt are still aching from Fridays session. Going to follow this program for a few weeks, see how I get on & then try some of the other excersises.  My instructor was quite impressed, I think he called them pliometric excersises.

Now to get my son out of bed - lazy toad!

Happy runningSmile

Yeah, the intervals stop it from being quite so boring. Should be going tonight, but I've wimped out because I want to run tomorrow.
