bad back and chiropractic care
Feb2020083:23 a.m.
Hi all-
I have been right on track with my marathon plan. That is until today. I have had a bad back forever and I have been seeing a Chiropractor since August. I have low back pain and a damaged L5 disc as well as a fairly severe rotation in my backbone. It is sort of like the spiky bumps down a stegasaurus's back pointed to the side. (You like that one?) He has been able to correct the rotation over time. I have had awesome results with this type of care and scaled back gradually to one visit per month or as needed.
On Saturday, I was stupid and lifted my 55 pound dog (55 pounds used to be nothing to me until the back issues began again) up to a shelf at the local dog wash. I figured I'd strained a little too hard but still made it thru my 12 mile run that afternoon. On Sunday, I was a little sore and yesterday it was worse. I could barely get out of bed this morning...had to roll to one side in agony.
I wore my back brace all day today (one that I had fitted to me for flare ups) because I knew I had a 7 mile quality run tonight after work. I did go to the gym back just moving my legs to walk during warm up hurt. I cranked up the treadmill to 7.3 and tried to suck it up but I only made it to 3 miles before I almost started to cry from the pain.
Luckily I got in to see the chiropractor within two hours and he said that I was completely rotated again. After some electrodes, biofreeze, ice, rolling table therapy and and adjustment, the sharp pains that take my breath away when I move are gone for the most part. It was instantaneous! I still have pulled muscle pain but I can make do with that. I am hoping to get to my easy 5 miles tomorrow night but if not, I'll make it up Thursday and Friday just in time for a hill run of 12 miles with a buddy on Saturday.
If any of you are suspicious about chiropractic care, don't be...just spend a lot of time interviewing and asking tons of questions before you let them touch you. Use one that your friends use too. Mine is not only a good doctor but totally hot too!!!
ps-He has in house massage therapists that are included in his treatment hence included in my copay!!!!

a_bet_made_me 'After that horrific post you tell us the doc is "hot"!!! do take care of your back - have you tried Pilates? I started doing that when recovering from my own back injury and it really helped my posture and spine - I never went to a chiropracter but that's another story!!!! Hope your back is ok and take it easy!!' added 20th Feb 2008

Runnernotajogger 'Tried a chiropractor once and must admit it wasn't a great experience. But I truly think she was a one off. I think most of us suffer from some sort of back injury, my lower spine is straightening out, and we put off getting it seen to because we think it will go away. Well doen for getting yours seen to so quickly. Just take it steady until you feel ok, pushing things now will only make things worse. Love T x' added 20th Feb 2008

trevorc 'Hi Kim, It sounds like you are not having the best of times with your back, it must be frustrating to feel like you are just getting back on tack & then it all gose wrong again, i hope that the Back doc can sort it out for you. Keep the chin up.' added 20th Feb 2008

Moby_Dick 'Wow, that back stuff sounds horrendous, I hope you are feeling heaps better now. Don't like chiros, all that clicking and pushing stuff back into place (have osteoarthritis of the spine and plenty of related neck problems. Mine seemed to get great enjoyment out of clicking my head back in place. Yuck). Give me a physio anytime - still needs must and all that. Take care now!' added 22nd Feb 2008
