Overview

Hi everyone!

In summer 2006 I looked like this:

I'd lost 3 stone with Slimming World, and was about to run my first 5k race. Not long after I signed up to run the London Marathon, something I'd wanted to do since watching Peter Duncan run the first one on Blue Peter as a kid, and then stopped running for the summer.

The following April I looked like this:

I'd regained the 3st, and more. The dismal experience was the complete opposite of what I'd always dreamed, and I stopped running for the summer - again.

I didn't give up though, and rejoined Slimming World, shifted some of the weight and started up the running again. This time I trained using a run/walk programme, and it paid off with pb's at the Reading Half and Edinburgh Marathon, and much better experiences.

Edinburgh was the real turning point, and unlike after London when I stopped running, I was out only 6 days later running 2 miles non-stop. I haven't looked back since, and am now training to run without the walking, and am getting faster (having lost over 4 stone as of September 2008). My pace has gone from around 15/16 minute miles to around 11:00 mins, and I'm aiming to get that to under 10 minute miling by my next marathon.

In 2008 I completed the New Forest Half, only walking through the drinks stations and up 3 small bits of hills. I never thought I would be able to run 13.1 miles almost non-stop. Losing the weight has given me so much confidence in my abilities, and I've had some overwhelming support from fellow bloggers. Things can only get better from here.

I currently look like this:

My advice to anyone thinking about running (or taking on any challenge that may initially seem unattainable) is to just go for it. Don't worry about your size, or your speed, or what other people think, but smile at the fact that you are the one out there making the effort. If you persevere it will get easier. Even if you don't succeed at first, keep trying and you will get there, and will learn so much on the way.

Ploddy bike

No after effects from yesterday run, apart from the usual niggles. The one in the leg in particular, but that eases up on the walk to school, and as it can't decide where to be a problem, I'm not worried. It's not getting worse.

So today was bike ride day. Spent the morning trying to get something done, so by the time I went out on the bike it was after lunch. Didn't leave much time, and only managed 7.79m. It was somewhat windy in places too - usually straight in my face - so I ended up with a pretty ploddy average of 8.9mph. I hope I manage to improve on that over 118 miles! Still it felt reasonable and the legs help up pretty ok after yesterday's run.

I tried the padded shorts again (with no knickers), and coupled with the gel saddle cover, the pressure spots from bones on saddle are no more. Trouble is, I now have to sort out somewhere else. Think I might need to tip the nose of the saddle down a tickle. Apart from that all is good in cycling world, and I still have plenty of time to get used to it and get some speed in there. Got the official email this morning to say I am am now registered, so no going back. Pulled out last year, couldn't do it again, far too embarassing!

Tomorrow will be another run. Will be a shorter one of 3 miles or so, and can't decide whether to fartlek or hill it. Think I might fartlek, I need the speed! I'm adding hills into the long run now as well, but as Brighton apparently only has a few inclines, I would rather try and get the speed over the flat bits rather than the strength up the hills. That will come after Brighton ready for Snowdonia.

Walking back from school this afternoon, I decided, with all this exercise, all these events and my ambitions in life, I'm feeling even more left out of the council estate world I live in. The most exercise people round here get is walking from their front doors to their cars to drive the 1/4 miles down the road to the shop, or the kids racing away from police cars on their bikes. So I've decided a change of image is needed. I'm going to dye half my hair black and bleach the rest of it blonde and buy some fake Ugg boots and scuff along on them so badly I end up walking on the insides while the soles migrate up the outside of my legs. Then I will accessorise with 5 kids all under 5 and start smoking again so I can bloke smoke in my kids faces while I swear at them to shut up. Lastly, I will join other similarly attired women and walk round in a large tribe taking over the pavements with our pushchairs. Only problem is, I'm about 15 years too old!

see, there are benefits of being too old! i so know what you mean! there are some lovely council estate families whose kids go to my kids school's and i get funny looks when i turn up in running gear to drop them off. i obvisouly should be chain smoking and stuffing my face and the kids faces with all the junk i got into my grubby hands...there is a one very loud mum at my son's preschool who needs to let us all know that she can afford to buy tesco sandwiches to her daughter for lunch...so healthy! she does look more glam than me on thursday mornings - i do a run before taking son in and then head to the gym... you imagine how glamorous i look!!!

You're going to have to move up here to Surrey, Kim. Have children called Sebastian and Tamsin. Drive a four by four. Wear a barbour jacket. Have a husband who works in the City!

Well done with the saddle, padded shorts & commando style! Just get that saddle in the right position now and you're away!!! And not too many chip dinners - big brother's watching you!
