Hypothermia and frostbite
Feb0220128:48 p.m.
Just how quickly DOES hypothermia set in? Felt distinctly odd for a few minutes after I got in from club. And I'm sure I had the beginnings of frostbite in my ears, fingertips and butt cheeks.
The very fact I went out in the first place is testament to my determination to take training seriously. There I was, quite happily dozing on the sofa snuggled under a duvet trying to keep warm this afternoon, whe it was suddenly time to get changed and go 'out there'.
Now I very often say I don't want to do something, but don't really mean it, and just get on with it after a whinge. But tonight I really didn't want to go out in the cold. I was already cold enough, and knew the cycle down to the leisure centre was going to hurt. I have to go down quite a steep hill, and the icy wind gets in every little hole. I even found my toes curled up in my trainers to get away from the wind coming in through the mesh!
But, I knew I would only be really cross with myself if I didn't get my arse down there, so on with the top, the fleece and the high-viz, topped off with running gloves, cycling gloves, hat and helmet. Yes, before I get any funny comments, I did have tights on too! But it was just as cold as I was fearing it would be!
Once we were all set we trotted off back the way I'd just come, to where we were going to do out 'undulating loops'. Did a few drills up the road first - and gae a resident on the look out for a friend to arrive something to giggle over. Did someting called 'scissors' where you had to take one long stride and one short stride, and come back using the opposite legs. We looked like a bunch of Frankensteins monsters!
After the fast group, and anyone who knew the route, were set off, a bunch of us newbies jogged round so we knew where we were going. First 0.4m loop at 10:52, and included quite a few slow bits to regroup as Ididn't want to go storming off ahead following teh faster group.
After that the slowest lot took longer to recover, while the faster slower ones set off again, with a minute recovery per loop. Second one was at 8:35, and while it felt fine, I knew it was a little too fast to keep each one a similar pace. So third loop was at a slightly more sedate 9:03. Thought I'd push for the last one though, and managed 8:27. By then the cold was hurting the chest, so we set off back to base. Covered a total of 4.85m.
Had taken the hat off half way through, and forgot to put it on before I cycled home. Same iwth the running gloves. So by the time I got home I was starting to get cold, and the wind chill had frozen the ears, the fingertips and the butt cheeks. It was so cold I was actually starting to feel queasy, but soon perked up after a cuppa and a banana.
Now thw cuppa is gone I'm heading for a hot shower. Just got to remove all the layers I put on when I got in first. And that is going to take some doing lol. I've even still got the hat and gloves on!
Very pleased I went though, as that's 4 runs in 4 days, and I don't think I've done that before. Did 3 in 3 once and paid for it during the last run, but today I managed to sprint up the hill at the end of each loop without too much trouble. Tired legs, yes, but nothing the needs ot be kept an eye on.
So, day off running tomorrow, but walking to school t pick the kids up for the weekend. Then a Slimming World careers event on Sayurday my lovely consultant is taking us to so I can find out what's what. Then 14m on the treadmill in the afternoon, before a rest on Sunday, and starting it all again on Monday.
