Must be getting serious

Jan0920124:58 p.m.

NOt ANOITHER blog? I hear you ask. Oh yes :). I'm getting back into this 100% - training AND blogging lol.

So, week 2 is underway, and so is my quest for the sub 60 10k. Today was the first speed session for some time. As I've been increasing the pace of most of my runs in the last mile, I decided to set the intervals at 9:31 pace for 0.25m. Yes, I know it sounds odd, but the treadmill only has speed in km's, though it's mph/min per mile on the display. So 9:31 it was, with 12:00 for the recoveries.

Also decided that I would do 6 reps. Don't know why, just seemed like a good number, with a mile each side it would bring it to a nice 5m, which I know I can do easily enough these days.

Wasnt sure how the legs would handle it considering I was up at 6.30 (still the middle of the night!) for the school run, and then lugged a heavy trolley full of food back up the hll, but the first rep passed without any problem. Even the last one wasn't too bad, so I'm upping the pace an increment or 2 (whatever that converts to) next time, and adding a couple more laps on the end.

Have decided to do 8 next time at the faster pace, then increase the pace a smidge again for 10 reps, before slowing a little for 3 weeks of half mile reps, increasing the speed and number, followed by 3 weeks of mile reps. Again, increasing the speed and number each week. That will leave me a week of gentler runs before the race.

What you think Pete? Look ok?

Booked an early birthday present yesterday, from mum. Filled out the entry form for the Ridgeway 40 walk in May :). Did it last year, and have never been in so much pain before! On the back of Brighton marathon training it seemed feasible, and I suppose it was, to an extent. First 10 miles were great, even if we did start in the rain. But it soon turned to sun, and I really enjoyed the countryside along the Ridgeway Path. Come 20 miles I was starting to tire, and by the time I got to the 28m check point, a small piece of heaven with tea and cakes, my left buttock had completely seized up. Getting out of the chair was excrutiaitngly painful, though it did wear off after w ehil (and a few painkillers!). Once darkness set in, and the rain agai, the last 5m were torture. The road went on forever, it was cold and wet, and the garmin had died, so I had no idea how far was left to go. I vowed that if I EVER suggested to ANYone that I wanted to do it again, they had my permission to shoot me.

But then everyone knows that what's said at the end of a race, and in the moments after it should be ignored by default, or no-one would enter anything :). So, once payment has been sent off, I will be back for number 2, and the 50th anniversary. I want a blue badge to go with my green one :).

  • Petecw29 'Sounds good training Kim but I'd query increasing speed, distance AND number of reps in one go as you should only increase one at a time. It's speed endurance you're after and 9:30 pace gives you a sub 59 minutes 10k, so keep same speed but go up to 6 half miles and if you manage that then go up to miles at same speed and see how many you can do . Great running as usual when you're on it!' added 10th Jan 2012
