I’m Broken

Again! And am getting pretty fed up with it now.

First off though, last Sunday was the last of the month so saw our intrepid group clock up another 8 miles of the Staffordshire way, taking us from the north of the County, down past Lake Rudyard and ending up at Leek.

You really have to marvel at the ingenuity and extent of the work that had to be done to build the original canal systems in the country. The dam and reservoir at Rudyard was created simply to provide enough water to feed the canals further south through a series of channels across the countryside. Remarkable. Lovely walk, especially as the heavy rain forecast didn’t materialise and the café at Rudyard can be recommended for its huge bacon butties too.

With no running done over the weekend I ventured out last night as the family were all occupied and Peg needed a walk. (My run speed is just a brisk walk to her).

My calf still felt stiff from last weeks longer run, and I’d convinced myself I just needed to run the stiffness out of it. ( Surprisingly you rarely  read about this course of action in fitness and health books) .

Set out taking small steps to warm the legs up and get the natural painkillers into the knee to dull the pain, then we were away. Only not for long after about a mile I could feel things tightening up, stretched out, started off again, stopped, stretched again, started again but before long my whole lower leg just felt like it was made of solid steel and felt swollen. Abandoned any idea of running and walked the rest of the way back to home.

There is obviously a weakness in that left calf muscle, as this is happening on a far too regular basis and I’m beginning to think that my running days may be over.  There again I enjoy it so much and get so much of a buzz after a run that I just do not want to consider that option just yet.

We’ll see.  For the time being though it’s ice, rest and Ibuprofen. Will think about a trip to the physio once this initial pain settles down and I can at least walk without a limp.

  • Hola 'That's really bad news. I hope the physio can work some miracles on you with time and maybe give you some strengthening exercise for a longer term solution. Best wishes Mike.' added 3rd Mar 2010

  • Skye_Trekker 'Sorry to read that you don't seem to be able to get rid of the calf injury - I hope you get a physio appointment soon and it helps sort the problem out.' added 3rd Mar 2010

  • Way_Too_Slow 'Oh my god not again! You seem to have been suffering for ages now, no wonder you are getting fed up! I definitely think you're going to need to see a physio who can give you a definitive answer as to what the problem is. I bet it's nothing to do with the lower leg and is somewhere else you didn't even realise. Don't lose heart!' added 3rd Mar 2010

  • Alaistair '"running days may be over"...no way Mike...what your have descibed so many times really does sound like something that can to worked on and overcome? Easy for me to say from a distance I do appreciate! Don't figure your the type of person to quit on this just yet...' added 4th Mar 2010

  • malcolms 'time to ban this negative thinking!! I seem to remember a time when you despaired that Peg would ever get out again (or is my memory deceiving me??)- now she's the one dragging you round. Bite the bullet and get back to the physio!!' added 4th Mar 2010

  • Geoff_rb 'Sorry to hear you're having a tough time of it Mike- maddening isn't it when the old injuries flare up again. In a similar boat myself still... no proper running since last June. On the other hand, do you actually think you could pack it in? I've sort of tried, but still find myself coming back to try again... too blardy addictive if you ask me! Anyway, hope a bit of rest and ibuprofen eases it up quickly for you.' added 9th Mar 2010
