Coaster GB & Barry the Baton

Aug0620102:30 p.m.

This run is a little closer to home - but still in the world right??

I took the day off from wor last Friday to help Barry the Baton around the coast of the UK.

Highly influenced by Eddie Izzard's fantastic feat of 43 marathons in 52 days, and one man's innate desire to "do something a bit different", the question "would it be possible to run a relay around the Coast of Great Britain?" was posed. The departure of a baton named Barry from Blackpool Tower on the 9th May gave us part of the answer. You can use Barry Tracker to see if he makes it and by following the clock you can see the time it is taking.

I must admit its a bit like a military operation! Volunteer runners hook up by the Coaster GB website or the Runner Wolrd Forum and swap phone and email details to see when and where we need to be to take the baton and run Barry that bit further.

I signed up for the Wallasea Island to Rochford leg which was meant to be 10 miles but due to the tough off road terrain was just over 12 miles. I met up with Phil after he got off the boat after running 9 miles on the Bradwell on Sean to Burnham on Croach leg. Constantly testing to see how he was progrssing and when/where we would meet.

We met on the quay side and with Sean cycling beside me we set off. Oh yes we had to turn up an hour earlier to drop my bike off the finnish as this is a point to point run!

Luckily it did not rain much and we ran through some interesting coastal terrain.

We completed the run at a care home in Rochford and proceded to try to find a room for Barry for the night! The first Inn was closed but the 2nd Inn had room for Barry! It was the lovely Royal Oak - great food and beer and a very helpful land lady who took a real shine to Barry, I do hope she was gentle with im...

We had a quick pint and some great food cycled back to our car. I must admit we did reward ourselves a little more on the cycle ride home - who would have though there would have been so many pubs serving real ale between Rochford and Wallasea Island.

Barry continues on his way around the UK - lets hope he makes it! Anyone can take part or cheer him on.

Karen
