Runs n walks in the Lakes......

Jul11201111:33 p.m.

Well, last week seemed to be a bit hit and miss and I felt all over the place so hopefully this week I'll be able to get back to the plan.

Tuesday was the usual 3 mile run, and I just did a local route from home, trying to up the pace a little as I'd only done 7 miles last weekend.

This Wednesday saw the midweek mileage jump again slightly to 6 miles so I decided on the spur of the moment to run home from work. I've just recently started to car share some days so I got a lift into work from Dave with the intention of running home. 10 minutes before I was due to finish work & get changed, the rains came. It was absolutely lashing it down, along with thunder & lightening and although I had kit for all weathers with me, I was prepared for a drowning, but as soon as I'd got changed, it fined up and the sun came out. Dave dropped me off at the 6 mile point and I ran the rest of the way home. He was dead impressed! He asked me how long it would take me so I told him about 1hr 6 minutes, it was actually 1hr 6 mins 13 secs - not bad pacing. He was even more impressed when I told him this the following morning!

Thursday I should have done 3 or 4 miles but it was the last day of term at work and we have an end of term buffet in the afternoon. And to be honest I'd just eaten far too much for lunch to even think about doing a 3 mile hill run so it didn't happen. I also had to get my kit ready for my weekend away in the Lakes. Pathetic excuse and I hated myself for it, but I really could not have run to the end of the street.....

Friday I drove up to Patterdale in the Lake District after work for a weekend of walking in memory of my boss's son Adam who died tragically two years ago, at the age of 24. There were about 60 of us altogether - lots of his friends & family. On Saturday we all set off to do different walks. I chose to walk with his Mum. We took the ferry on Lake Ullswater from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge and then walked back, about 13 miles. It was a beautiful day, lovely and sunny and the views were just spectacular. Then it was a huge BBQ for everyone on the campsite.

On Sunday I was very disciplined & focused and managed a 5 mile off-road run before breakfast from Patterdale to Hartsop, a lovely little village down the valley. I don't normally run at this time of day as I'm used to going out after work so I find it hard early doors. But, I just took my time and it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. It was sunny, the light was gorgeous and the scenery was just stunning, looking up and down the valley and in the distance Helvellyn. It was so lovely that after breakfast I went back and walked the route again, but this time with my camera!

So, not much running really but I definitely got plenty of exercise and 'time on feet'!! Guess it was a Long Slow Walk, a Short Slow Run and a Fast Short Walk !!!!!

Hope to get back on track with the plan this week, looking forward to the York 10k in a few weeks time.

Oh, and by the way - I forgot to mention, I recently achieved the award of Realbuzz's featured blogger! First time in 4 years!!!! Wey hey!!!!!

That weekend sounds really inspirational and of course very very sad. Re buffets at work- this coming Friday there will be a magnificent feast as although the students went last week we have all had mandatory attendance this week. It's a huge cultural and diversity splurge where people bring in a dish. Last year it was absolutely huge and I have never ever seen such a splendid array of dishes from all sorts of origins! Sadly this year I won't partake due to my challenge on Sunday. I simply darent try any new spicy food less than 2 days before the event! Sob. ' added 12th Jul 2011

Sounds like your training is coming on really well - no need to worry about missing the odd run. Well done on getting Realbuzz's featured blogger award! x' added 12th Jul 2011

  • tinabee 'You are doing so well with your training and a week of cross training in the form of walking is no bad thing at all. So where are these photos you took on your walk?' added 12th Jul 2011

  • Firefly123 'I think a 13 mile walk more than counts as your LSR, Alison and how lovely to be walking with Adam's mum. There's nothing quite like open space and nature to help you reflect on life.' added 12th Jul 2011

  • simonedumergue 'What a fab post Alison, on so many levels. I could just imagine too the sheer beauty of that early morning run in stunning scenary. A terrific idea to go on that walk in memory of someone. Now I want to see you improve your pacing so you can knock that 13 seconds off your 6 mile pace ;-)' added 13th Jul 2011
