The end of week 4

Jun19201111:19 p.m.

Another week has quickly passed me by and another week training ticked off. This week, as per the plan, I've done Tues 3 miles, Weds 4 miles and Thurs 3 miles where I tried to include a bit of hills. Although I tried to keep to the same effort level rather than pace, this did result in a couple of walking breaks and even 'rest stops'. Definitely a lot of room for improvement in this department! I guess it can only get easier.

Yesterday was this week's LSR and it was 9 miles. Just for a change of scenery I decided to drive to the coast and run along the prom which I always enjoy. When I left home the weather didn't look too clever but by the time I'd got to the 'seaside' it was fab. Although a bit breezy, it was lovely and sunny. I left Kelvin to enjoy his lunch in a nice cafe and trotted south down the prom following the Blackpool Half Marathon route. I almost reached the tower and then turned round and headed back. Although it's 100% flat so not all that challenging I did run on the 'top prom' which does have a few slight undulations and was far windier than the bottom prom so I did feel it was harder work.

I did try to keep pace at about 11 mins per mile, but will probably slow this down even more when my LSR mileage picks up.

1) 11.00 2) 11.01 3) 10.50 4) 11.13 5) 10.50 6) 10.55 7) 10.59 8) 10.19 9) 10.29   1:37:40

Next week's training is similar to this week with a slight increase on the Weds run and the LSR.

Have a good week everyone.

I don't do hill reps but I do try and include hills in all my runs simply for the training effect. On the day you felt you struggled with the hill- maybe you just were having a bad day! We all get them. If things do feel hard at times- don't worry about it. That's what I try and tell myself anyway! Sometimes improvements aren't immediate but in a few weeks you'll suddenly realise that you've just run up a couple of hills and barely thought about it. Honestly! With your dedication and commitment to your training programme I have no doubt about it.' added 20th Jun 2011

  • Hat 'Hills are horrible. Fact. But by golly they do make a difference to your overall running and leg strength when faced with a big challenge. I now swear by them. And at them!!! Well done on your run - good going.xxx' added 20th Jun 2011

  • tinabee 'Echo both Ladyfe and Hat's comments completely. Hills are hard by their very nature but I actually quite enjoy the challenge of them now and nothing beats blasting down the other side! In fact I dont like completely flat routes now - undulations are much more interesting, Keep up the good work.' added 20th Jun 2011
