Belle Vue Racers

May2120103:11 p.m.

Went up to the track at Sportcity last night.

If you don't know, Sportcity is the complex housing athletics, squash, tennis, cycling and more that was built for the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and is now owned by the council. If you ignore the fact Man City’s stadium/council house is part of it, it’s a pretty cool facility to have on the doorstep.

I ran along the canal to the athletics stadium with a couple of lads from the Tuesday night Sweatshop group with the aim to meet up with the Belle Vue Racers to join their speed session. From their website they seemed like a nice club and as soon as we got their the head coach sat us down and (after telling us off for running there) told us all about the club. Then it was out to the track. There were about 20 there, but apparently there’s close to 60 in BVR altogether.

For stat fans, this was the session:
1200m jog warm up

6 x 200m (200m recovery)
4 x 300m (100m recovery)
2 x 400m (400m recovery)
1x 600m (200m recovery)

400m jog cool down

Which actually works out at 7.2km, so no wonder the coach didn’t want us to run to and from the sessions in future!

It was over 20 degrees and we were really feeling it. Loads of people chatted to me on the recoveries and the other women were particularly friendly. I jogged back to town with the lads and by the time I got home I was spent!

The track session isn’t on next week, but I’ll definitely be there the week after.

  • andy_bee 'That sounds great - you will get even faster ! The only time I've done track sessions was when I went to Tina's club in Livingston - bloody hard work but I can see how much good it could do if I could get to a track regularly.' added 21st May 2010

  • tinabee 'Absolutely fab session! You will find that if you work hard at those sessions you will increase your pace even more (not that I want to encourage that necessarily lol ;o) It certainly was warm last night even here in usually baltic Scotland! Have a great weekend.' added 21st May 2010
