50 days to go.

Jul30201110:38 a.m.

50 days to the GNR. Gulp.

After last week’s mammoth running effort- I’ve never run more in a week before (35 miles).  I’d already run on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – before a day off on Thursday and then my usual Friday 5k and my LSR on Saturday morning.

I do enjoy my Friday blasts. I often get home late and it’s a perfect way to put the working week behind me, it’s also a great cure for headache. Any way last Friday I didn’t quite match my previous PB but wasn’t far off. I’m consistently doing these now in sub 25 mins.

Saturday was my LSR – but rather than heading out at 6:30, I got up at 6 and had a quick breakfast then headed out at 7:30. With the fuel on board I managed just over 10 miles at a steady pace. It was rather strange running the usual 10 mile route a good hour later than usual – there are more runners and cyclists around at 7:30 than at 6:30!!

On Monday I was back doing the shorter, faster runs. 4.5 miles this time in just under 9 min/mile pace and then the same on Wednesday – slightly longer at 6 miles. Yesterday I attacked another 5k – was more aggressive at the start with the pace on the treadmill set at 8mph, needless to say I couldn’t sustain it but felt quite good even at just over 2 miles before having to slow down. I sense that the Pb will tumble again before long.

This morning was out at 6:30 with no breakfast- doing the dame route as last week. What a difference the breakfast made! I was starting to struggle at the 6.5 mile point and the pace really dropped off.  Fortunately with the earlier start there was no one to see me wilt.

I think I posted last time that my ipod had died. Well in fact I think it just got very wet with perspiration. I dried it out in the airing cupboard for a few days and managed to restore it eventually and rewarded myself with andownload from Audio Fuel. This was a 1 hour work out at 160 bpm. I listened to this on my run this morning and though the 160 bpm was a great to start with, I wonder if the slightly faster pace may have contributed to my energy dip. (Either that or the thought of spending the rest of the day harvesting onions!).

I may manage to get another run in with my son tomorrow if he’s up for another trouncing in which case the I will have broken through the 100 miles for the month. So far I have done 98. In fact come to think of it, I may just do 2 miles tomorrow anyway.

So 7 weeks tomorrow I line up on the central motorway East for the jog to South Shields.  I WILL beat the John Reid Rd this year!!

Take care.

You have a really good mix of different training runs now - are you following any particular plan? Your son doesn't stand a chance...I wonder if I can tempt mine back into his running shoes...' added 30th Jul 2011

  • Jenny1961 'On top form indeed Malcolm. I don't know what John Reid Rd is - or WHO he is/was for that matter but clearly it is personal to both you and Alaistair! I used to have ipod shuffles but they were useless and stopped working if they got damp. And then the software on the pc just stopped working. So I gave up and bought a cutesy MP3 player and have never looked back. Just simple drag and drop downloads. No software! ' added 31st Jul 2011
