Start of the challenge!!

Jun12200811:40 p.m.

Well here we are - I cant run; have never run and i'm certainly not the worlds greatest exerciser but i've decided to enter the 10k in inverness on the 5th of October.

Its going to be a huge challenge as my fitness is pretty atrocious; although saying that, I can walk for miles and a pretty good pace too!  Went on a bit of a wander tonight and completed just under 4miles in 57minutes which i'm pretty impressed with; means i'm walking at a pace of around 18mins/mile and at least half a mile of this was up hill!

If this is me just starting out (and i know its walking not running!) who knows where i'll be in 16wks on race day?  My aim is to complete the race in less than an hr and a half and thats me walking not running so i'd like to think that if i can get the work and the miles in that i'd be able to run at least 2-3k of it and if i can do this i'll be happy and will have met my own target.

Theres a bit of a personal reason to doing the 10k; other than the fact that i like a challenge and want to complete a marathon by the time i hit 30 (only turned 23 last month so i've still got 7years); my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago so i'm doing it for her and to make her proud and also to raise money for the unit thats helping her through this.  Gives me an added incentive i think and to chuck in some more pressure i'm smack bang in the middle of my professional accountancy training so its going to be an interesting few weeks!

I am going to do this though and if today is anything to go by i should be okay come race day! Even if i do end up walking it!

Did the big loop down to the village; along the coast up and up through Dalgety Bay so my target is to do this at least twice a week if i can and failing that i'll do the small loop down to the links - want to go for a walk every night though; even if its just 10 mins.

Right guess its bed time - hoping the exercise will help me sleep - has been a long day and an even longer week!

  • carolflora 'Hi Marz. Go for it. I think what you are doing is absolutely fantastic, both for your mum, yourself and all of those who will benefit from your efforts at fundraising. You're highly motivated and I reckon if you don't overtrain and end up injuring yourself, you could easily do it within or around the hour mark. I've recently been in almost exactly the same situation and did a 10k for the same reasons. I couldn't even jog for 30 seconds at the beginning of training, and I'm double your age! You'll do just fine. What helped me to break into jogging during my walks was following a complete beginner's plan. Jogging for one minute, walking for three, only five times in one session, and following that sort of slow build up every other day until eventually you're jogging, say, for 3 minutes, and walking for one. There should be some good beginner's training plans on the internet. For me the atmosphere of the whole race experience was indescribable. All the way around the course my heart was full with thinking of loved ones who've been through this horrible disease. The race was emotional - but it was a positive thing, and I smiled and waved and laughed and enjoyed it. Yes, there was also a bit of a conflict - I was running for charity so did not want to overdo it either in training or during the event but also I wanted a good run and time. So I thought, well, I'm not an elite runner, I'm not going to win (!) so decided not to take it too seriously on the day. In the end, the atmosphere and being part of it will pull you along, and hopefully you'll enjoy every wonderful minute - and not want it to end! I think your mum will be really proud of you. I wish you well and hope your mum makes a speedy and complete recovery. xx' added 13th Jun 2008
