I've Seen The Torch
May2120128:30 p.m.
Yes it’s true I’ve seen the torch and the flame. We took the family intoPlymouthon Saturday evening to see the Olympic torch relay. We avoided the mass crowds gathered on Plymouth Hoe and managed to get a good position on one of the main streets. As this was the end of the first day there were some inevitable delays (about 45 mins) first we had all the major sponsors giving out all sorts of bits and pieces. Then after a further 10 mins or so we had the police out riders followed by yet more police on mountain bikes and then finally the torch and the flame itself a lone guy running amongst a dozen or so beefy (and that’s just the females) security types. I’m not sure what I was expecting but if you take away all the commercial stuff I certainly felt as if it was something special and was so glad we made the effort to go and see it. We even managed to see the convoy the following morning as it was going between ‘running’ villages and safe to say that despite the route being lined with people they weren’t going to be stopping for anyone. So if you get the chance I would recommend going to see it.
Running wise after the MK marathon had a couple of easyish weeks and then last weekend we went up to our friends in Herefordand on the Sunday I ran the local half marathon. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the run itself or how I was going to get on. As half marathons go these days this was a very low key affair. Overall I really enjoyed the course there were a couple of longish hills it the first 3 miles as we headed out into the country side. The course took us on an undulating course through some of the local villages before heading back to the finish at the local horse racing course, fortunately we didn’t have to bother with the fences. So all in all a well established, well run it does what it says on the side of the tin run. Only £14 to enter you do get cotton t-shirt and yes I would definitely do it again. A couple of small points the water was in plastic cups and I’ve still not managed to master drinking more than I spill over myself. Secondly the later part of the race was run on open roads which was a tad un-nerving especially when a car towing a caravan go past with inches to spare and I also had a Chelsea tractor hot my heels for a short time before the driver forced her way past me only to pull over in a gateway less than 100 yards further up the road!! As for my race went pretty much too normal. Started off to fast for the first 3 miles including the hills, then I managed to run a pretty consistent 6 miles or so, then there were a tough couple of miles before I was able to get myself together and put in a good finish. Managed to get round in 1.38.58, really pleased with the time considering I’d only ran a marathon 2 weeks before and I did over do the carb (beers and a full English) loading on Friday and Saturday and I would have been happy with a 1.45 before the event finished in 121st place out of about 600.
The running’s going to be taking a bit of a back seat for a few weeks as I‘ve got a 100 mile bike ride over Dartmoor at the end of June and I’m desperate to get some good bike miles in before the event. I have however got the option of dropping down to 100 km route if the worst come to the worst.
Finally a big well done to Keith and all his fellow 10 in 10 marathon runners, a fantastic achievement and some serious money raised for a very worthy charity, congratulations to one and all.
Now it’s about time to enjoy some of that long lost sunshine.

Johnf 'Will defintely get out to the torch when it comes through here. Water from cups is a challenge if you don't like stopping, doesn't seem to matter whether you tip some out or not, it still falls mainly away from your mouth. Good time for the half.' added 22nd May 2012

SeanG 'Yeah, I'm still learning the water from cups routine. After 65 marathons I'm still not there...maybe by 100? Doubt it! :-) Well done on the half and good luck with getting back to the bike. At least the weather looks to have picked up!' added 22nd May 2012
