Ready to board the taper train

Apr05201011:46 a.m.

Hi All

A really testing week, shocking weather, a couple of injury concerns, problems with my asthma but alas, Ive made it and not a moment too soon.

After a lighter weeks training last week, I felt fresh come Tuesday for my first run, a relatively easy 4 mile run during my lunch break. For some reason I found the run challenging but made it decent time.

The on Wednesday I was due to run 8 mile from work to my parents and this was when the wheels fell off. It was already raining heavily but I had my rain jacket and running in the rain doesnt usually bother me so I set off. Asthma soon became a problem, I carry a reliever which normally does the trick but as it was cold and raining it just didnt work and then the hail storm arrived and as I was now nursing a pounding headache I couldnt run another yard. Hit the wall at 2 miles, what a wimp. I arranged for a colleague to pick me up but knew I had made the right decision to stop as I felt dreadful. Got home and quickly recovered and was really tempted to head out and give it another go but my wife put her foot down and hid my trainers.

Didnt feel much better on Thursday so rested and decided to go back out on Friday for a 10 mile run. I choose a route that was flat and always liked as its in the country and a nice area with little traffic. I really needed a good run as my confidence was starting to flag and I was disappointed. A good 10 miles done with average of 8:28 mins per mile which was my fastest for that distance so a good time had by all. I pushed my final LSR back to Monday to ensure I felt fresh and could run well.

So to this morning, set of early as we have people round this afternoon. Cant say I found it easy but wasnt going to head home until the 20 miles were done. Eventually completed in 3hrs 5mins, 3 minutes faster than the last time i ran 20. Fuelling strategy seemed to work, Ive using the lucozade gels and find them easy to stomach. Also swallowed a bug of some sorts, not sure if that provided any nutritional goodness but it tasted nicer than the gels.

So anyway, one the taper train at last and with the next stop Greenwich, I cannot bloody wait.

  • squa25 'yay! well done Nick! Welcome aboard! Sounds like a challenging week gone, but don't worry about that, all the hard work is done now. We're almost there. I'm getting excited at the thought of it all being over in less than 3 weeks now. Ps you're lucky it wasn't a wasp you swallowed, imagine having that buzzing around your tum?!' added 5th Apr 2010

  • STUBLACK ' 3 weeks is a long train journey, but one we all need to be on. Well done on the great 20 miles, and well done for stopping the other night. As you're well aware carrying on could have caused you a lot of problems.' added 5th Apr 2010

  • JSIMMONDS 'Excellent stuff. Don't beat yourself up about that aborted run. Happens to us all and you managed a good 10 miler and a great 20 miler since. You are ready, my friend.' added 7th Apr 2010
